Biography
Winternight Tailor A shy, timid tailor, Winternight had his pearl stolen by a pack of mirrors and was held hostage to their whims until he was accidentally rescued by Eztli, who was traveling as an envoy. He followed the coatl back to the island of Prufrock and started down the long road to recovery. Despite counseling, he still has an intense fear of mirror dragons and is constantly checking to make sure his pearl is still at his side. Personal Information
Relationships Mate: Eztli
History and Stories Winternight was born into a clan in the Foxfire Bramble, a land of darkness and thorns. He was shyer and more timid than others in the clan; he couldn't stop himself from being bluntly honest even if a white lie would have suited the situation better, and he had little interest in games or competition, preferring to sew quietly in a corner while others engaged in sport. His clan members tolerated him because he provided them with beautiful clothing. When out collecting the materials he needed for his craft, Winternight was ambushed by a pack of mirror dragons, who stole his pearl from him and told him that if he wanted it back he'd have to do whatever they said. Too ashamed to return to his clan, where he would be outcast anyway without his pearl, he submitted to the various cruelties they gained entertainment from inflicting on him. They forced him to sew for them but half the time would tear up his creations, declaring them not good enough. Winternight was often made to accompany the mirrors when they traveled to other clans to gamble in games of chance, where they enjoyed demeaning him in front of an audience. On one such excursion, one of the opposing gamblers was a coatl who was visiting a shadow clan to recruit members for his coatl colony in the Starfall Isles. To the horror of Winternight, the mirror dragons decided to gamble using his pearl as collateral. To the horror of the mirror dragons, the coatl ended up winning. They were rather unamused to lose their servant and toy, and the coatl was bemused to have suddenly gained a pearlcatcher. Realizing the situation was about to turn hostile, the coatl, Ez, gifted the mirror dragons the set of bracelets that he had been gambling with as thanks for the game, then picked up the pearl and gestured for Winternight to leave with him. After reaching the outskirts of the shadow clan's territory, Ez returned his pearl to him, assuming the pearlcatcher would then return to his home clan, but Winternight insisted that since Ez had won him, he had to serve the coatl somehow. Though Ez protested that he despised the very idea of servitude and needed no repayment, the injured and emaciated pearlcatcher trailed after him as the coatl made his way back to his home in the Starfall Isles, where the clan's physicians tended the deep wounds on his hindquarters which had been inflicted by thorns and the mirrors' claws and Cita used her knowledge of dragon psychology to attempt to reverse some of the damage the mirrors had inflicted mentally and emotionally. Ez remained by his side the entire time, allowing him space in his lair while he recuperated. By the time Winternight was healed enough to return home, he realized he didn't want to - he wanted to remain with Ez, not out of any obligation but because he had fallen in love with him. He also enjoyed the creative and scholarly atmosphere of the clan and finally felt inspired to take up sewing again. The skydancer Yew, a fellow tailor, decreed that Winternight was going to assist him in the Stitchery, his new apparel shop in Lantern Port, so Winter spends most of his days in the back of the store crafting clothing to sell along with the dyemaker Ember, the weaver Eugene, the designer Rosa, and the hatter Rettah. Ez and some of the island's other mages occasionally enchant some of the clothing, and these magical pieces are the shop's best sellers. He accidentally became involved in the prophecy of the Obscurum Castrum Bellatorum and the quest for the dark castle when he and Ez ate a peach that proved to be the key to the castle. Winternight was thrilled to visit his mate's childhood home during the Crystalline Gala. Catching a cold was an unfortunate side effect of his first trip to the Southern Icefield, but it did allow him to discover two members of his extended family - the physician Cindermoon and his son Hazelmist. He was grateful to have the distraction of his family when Ez decided to go off unaided into the spirit realm to rescue some hatchlings who had been spirited away; it was nice to have someone to confide his worries in, and Cindermoon confessed his own secrets, in particular his ability to understand animals and the many problems it had caused. Much to his delight, after telling them that his mate's clan was currently without a doctor, both of them decided to relocate to Lantern Port to open a practice there. Art |
