B E G I N N I N G
During her Search, Pyre came across a small tangle of brooks snaking about beneath a copse of trees. To one side stood a vertical cliff face, looming tall and steady over the sun dappled grasses. Something stirred in Pyre's chest at the sight of it, which she dismissed as exhaustion, and she was drawn to stay. She convinced herself that her goal would be a small divot in the cliff side - just big enough to lay down, nothing more, and she set to work. As the day wore on and the early-morning sun drew higher, she heard a splash in the water behind her and turned to look. A guardian male was flopping his face about in one of the streams. He was so completely absorbed in... whatever he was doing, that he jolted in surprise when he paused to look about and noticed Pyre half protruding from the rock wall. He chirped a pleasant greeting, his voice strangely pleasing as it rumbled happily about in his chest, and he asked if Pyre needed any help digging. He hadn't waited for an answer, nor had he asked for any instruction, and simply flitted up to Pyre's half-finished divot and crowded into the tiny space to get started. |

The sun filtered in as a comfortable gleam as she gazed with silent bewilderment at the dragon beside her. He introduced himself as "Maka." Pyre quietly crooned her own name in response, before turning without another word to begin hunting for a meal. The guardian Maka went along, chattering and carrying on the entire time, seemingly content with the utter disinterest Pyre portrayed. It didn't bother him. And, after a while, Pyre realized that, in turn, his incessant chit-chat didn't bother her, though she never had the chance to voice this amidst the constant din of his voice. Not long after Maka moved in, Pyre somehow lost track of her Search. Something inside her pushed it to the side, inexplicably taking it out of focus so that she could prioritize her now-more-permanent den and denmate. After a short time, she was gravid, and laid two eggs. One egg shone with stability and health, the other was leathery and soft. The eggs blossomed into flowering little hatchlings whose coming days were foretold by their health at birth. The very day that Canary, the weak sister, passed from Pyre's world, Maka arrived with a small, misty-eyed bundle. He had picked up a stray spiral hatchling, who settled immediately into the family as if it was his own shell in the nest.

Soon, the small family gathered new friends. A trio of fighters, an outcast coatl, an exhausted old tundra - a menagerie of dragons from all over Sornieth somehow found their way to the small den. Pretty soon they had their own small stream of trade coming in and out, and the den was expanding. Now, there are magically woven branches creating additional platforms and personal residences in the trees around the cliff, new tunnels in the mountainside, all manner of new brothers and sisters. It's almost it's own bustling little town, and Pyre's grand hall extends from the trees over the whole of the clan where she can watch her company bustle in the sunset's light.Looking out at her home, now a few years old, Pyre realizes for the first time that she hasn't once thought about her Search in the entire time she was building her clan. And, as her adopted son Boh flits past and flashes a mild grin in her direction, she's floored by an epiphany: her clan is her Charge. The reason she never felt the need to move on is because her charge would find her, gather around her, and grow to depend on and respect her. A family, a community. She is overwhelmed with pride, and finally feels a sense of finality; she can now focus entirely, passionately, on keeping her loved ones safe and well. A small grin seems to play at the edges of her mouth as she stares, warm light dying over the horizon with the gentle promise to greet her again in the morning, her new life stretching out before her. |
