“It never was easy,” Pele sighed, her breath trickling into the cold air. “Seeing them all leave, it tears your heart to pieces and your left to pick them up and put yourself back together.”
Pele laid on her stomach, wrists crossed. Isildur, a burdened Tundra, sat across from her. He listened with acute attention, his ears perked. “Yeah, it hurts.” Isildur agreed.
She rustled her dress, easily frustrated when she was cold: she liked the warmth of summer and the blinding sun. Or heat radiating off a kindled fire in the night.
Pele had just swept Isildur off his feet and got him back to his joyful, determined self only to have his Father thank her, and find herself in Isildur’s place. Her heart felt burdened upon her children leaving. It should have been left in the past, buried away under layers of inner walls, where she would never have to think about it again. But here she was, digging for a way to hurt herself.
“Pele?” Isilidur asked her, ducking his head down to catch her eyes. “I know that look, something’s twisting you.”
“I miss them, is all.”, Pele sniffled, gathering herself together. “Sorry to make a scene, Isildur.”
“That’s okay, don’t leave it bottled up like that,” Isildur grabbed her talons in his own. “It’s okay to cry, you don’t have to always act happy, I know you’re not.”
Pele brushed off his talons to wipe her teary eyes. A lump lodged in her throat, threatening to burst like her emotions.
“I know.”, she quietly murmured, her voice snatched away by the overwhelming grief. She let her walls shatter, waves crashing down her snout and falling over her chin. “But I-but I need to look towards the future.” Pele stuttered.
“Right, that’s the mindset you need.”
“It started when I arrived here. I awoke. Felt a power: an aura within me that was ravenous. I had to do something to feed that hunger. You have filled that hole for me and I thank you, Isildur. Now, teaching the young of the clan is something worth living and fighting for.”
Isildur chuckled and got to his feet. He pounced playfully onto Pele. “C’mon!” he bantered. “Get out of your mood!”
“Fine,” Pele said, trying to contain a giggle. She failed, a bout of laughter erupting from her maw. “Let get the children, maybe they’ll want to play too?”
“Man,” Islidur whined.
Pele was young at heart and it was hard for her to resist the urge for a quick game of tag or hide-and-seek.
“You going to have to give me a break! These bones are getting thin!” Pele jokes. “Catch me if you can!” she teases, taking flight and racing out of the cave into the fresh air, her feathers billowing in the light breeze. When she glanced behind her she seen Isildur, and he was having trouble keeping up. She snorted, slowing down to give him a chance.
But when she did he caught up to her and they both tumbled into the field under them. Both exchanged laughs and remarks. The mood was light and everyone was in balance once again. Pele felt as ease and content with her past. Isildur was here and now, and she needed to focus on him and the present.
