Continued from Lucent Part 1

Two dragons peered around one corner in the great hallway. A grey Mirror was resting his head on the Nocturne's now flattened hat as they watched another younger dragon walk away from them.

"But haven't you always wondered why Vixen answered the door instead of one of the guards when I brought you back? Or...your parents?"

"To scare off normal dragons?"

Dewlap responded by rolling his eyes and glaring.

Rockpools grinned. "I'm kidding."

"I know," the Nocturne grumbled.

"But if I have to take your question seriously...I haven't. Even after all these years growing up with her."

They gazed after the Tundra as she turned a corner at the opposite end of the hall and disappeared from their sight.

Rocky looked down at Dewlap and asked, "Why? What do you think?"

...

“Ohhh Vicky!” an old voice sang behind her.

The dark Tundra stopped where she was and turned her head to look back. A white and black form was following her.

“It's Vixen, Dewlap,” the Tundra said.

“Right right, of course. You don't mind if I walk with you, do you?” Dewlap asked.

Vixen resumed her step when the Nocturne reached her side. “No.”

“So, where're you heading?”

“Just around the halls.”

“Is this your routine walk?”

“What?”

“I've just noticed you like to pace around here for quite some time.”

“There isn't much else I like to do.”

Dewlap froze midstep and stared after the Tundra as she continued on her way, not looking back. Thinking quickly, Dewlap picked up his pace and was back in step with Vixen.

“But I'm sure being a guard must be a little exciting, right?” he asked.

“What do you mean?”

By the Eleven, he hoped he was wrong. “Aren't you a guard? Isn't that why you were the only one who let me, Rocky and everydrake back in the castle that day?”

“No.”

“I see. Guard in training then?” Dewlap pressed.

“No.”

“Because it's one of the few things you like to do?”

“No.”

“Because somedrake told you to?”

Vixen continued walking ahead, but Dewlap had noticed a slight hesitation in the Tundra's step. The Nocturne slowed to a stop when Vixen didn't answer. Sighing, Dewlap called to her. “Vixen.”

Vixen finally halted, though she didn't look back to face the Nocturne. Dewlap snapped his claws and he reappeared in front of her, though careful not to meet her vacant gaze directly.

“Why was it you instead of...” Dewlap trailed off as he saw Vixen's expression begin changing.

The Tundra's silver eyes slowly widened before quickly closing tight. Her lower jaw quivered and tears were forced from under her lids, soaking her fur. Vixen suddenly leaned forward and buried her head in Dewlap's mantle, her wails muffled in the burlap that draped the Nocturne's neck and chest.

Venturing further, Dewlap whispered, “Did something terrible happen? Something that never goes away no matter how hard you want to forget?”

Vixen sat on her haunches and cried harder, gripping the older drake tight with her front paws.

Dewlap followed her move, sitting down and wrapped his pale arms and dark wings around the Tundra. Glancing around, and satisfied to see nodrake else around, he waved one paw and the hall surrounding them was replaced with shore some ways from the castle. Small waves lazily lapped at the sand beneath their feet.

Vixen pulled her head out from Dewlap's burlap mantle, dark streaks were on her cheeks. “I've never cried before,” she blubbered, “not even when...it happened.”

Dewlap rubbed her back. “It's...just let it out.”

Running one paw across her eyes, Vixen said, “But Ice dragons aren't supposed to have emotional breakdowns.” Vixen sagged against the Nocturne again, sighing. “I think it's what I was also told.”

Dewlap jerked. “By who?”

Vixen's lower jaw began quivering again. “I don't remember.”

“Okay, I know. That's not your fault,” Dewlap said softly. “But do you remember what else happened? Was anydrake else around at the time? When did it happen?”

Grabbing a part of Dewlap's mantle, Vixen used it to dab her silvery eyes dry. “A few years ago. I think. The rain was so loud I couldn't sleep, so I went for a walk in the hallway. It was night, but Urdin and Bogatyr weren't guarding the entrance, and somedrake was pounding at the door. I didn't want to wake anydrake else, so I opened the door to see who it was. And..." Trailing off, Vixen closed her eyes and her voice cracked as more tears cascaded down her face. "When his eyes met mine, I felt...like I was in danger, but I couldn't move...or look away...”

Dewlap remained silent as he let the Tundra continue.

"I don't know how long he looked into my mind, but then...Mudflat came and he tried to catch the other dragon...he called him a..."

"Soul sucker?"

Vixen raised her sore eyes up at Dewlap. "You know them, too?"

"Yes. They're..." The Nocturne paused for a moment. "They're dragons with a dangerous power."

Vixen dragged one paw over her eyes once more and sniffed. "That night, after Mud came over, he shoved me out of the way and tried to grab at...the other drake...but he was scared and flew away."

Dewlap inhaled deeply before releasing a slow exhale, and he sat up straighter. "Okay. I'll go see if I can have a few words with Mud. Where is he now?"
