"I have been made to protect you,"

He still wasn’t sure how he found himself here. It had been a full week since he’d lost his clan and all these woods looked the same to him. They were home, sure, but the Tangled Wood wasn’t known for its kindness when it came to the unprepared. His feet were tired and he wanted nothing more than to lie down and give up but he knew to do so would only spell disaster. So still he pushed forward, keeping what appeared to be a large column in his line of sight at all times. It was his beacon, his destination, and he was determined to get to it before exhaustion overtook his young body.

It was on the way here that he first found her. He almost stepped on her egg, in fact. A quick glance downward showed him this egg in his path was nearly matured and ready to break open. Alone in the Tangled Wood was no place to begin one’s life, so he managed to get the egg onto his back and continued his way. In retrospect he sometimes thought those precious moments could have cost him everything, but he wouldn’t have it any other way. Saving her was the single most important thing he’d done with his life, and nothing would change his opinion.

When he finally made it to the column, his little egg in tow, it was the closest thing to daylight that the Tangled Wood saw. The darkness was pervaded with odd, silvery shafts of light that just barely permeated the constant darkness. It was from these he could make out his surroundings--The Forum of the Obscured Crescent. His clan had whispered of this place, so far from the Driftwood Drag they’d called home. It was known for its age and for the magics that seeped into every nook and cranny of its stone. He crawled into one of these nooks, placing the egg behind him protectively and gazing out into the center of the Forum. The dragons here were beginning to mull about, talking and laughing in a communal fashion. It wouldn’t be for some time that they noticed him and his “cargo,” not until a few moons after she hatched, in fact.

“Shush, shush, shush!” The little Imperial laughed, coiling around her Snapper before racing to the back of the little nook they lived in. He sighed, watching her play. While things had been calm enough up until now, he still had a healthy paranoia that everything was going to go terribly wrong if they were discovered.

“Now Meila,” He began, starting towards her, “You know I only say that for your own good.” She laughed loudly and darted past him, into the open and right into the middle of a band of passing Mirrors. His heart stuttered for a moment and he hurried as fast as he could to her side as the group gazed down at them.

“What do we have here?” One began, a female, “I don’t remember anyone new moving in.” She grinned in that feral fashion he’d become used to seeing on a Mirror’s face, “Why, where are you living?”

“Meila, we should go.”

The Imperial didn’t listen. Instead she flicked her tail and pointed towards their little hole, announcing loudly, “We live there!”

“Meila.”

“Oh really?” The Mirror flicked her tail and looked to her companions, “You know, that’s awful close to our little hovel.”

“Really?” Meila’s eyes were wide with excitement. He wanted nothing more than to pull her away right then and there.

“Yeah,” Began another, a male this time, adopting a similar grin, “Do you know what we do to our neighbors?”

“Listen, we don’t want any trouble--” The Snapper began but the male interrupted him.

“Of course you don’t.” He cooed, flicking his tail and licking his maw, “But I’m afraid I do.”

In a flash the male pounced. He turned his side to him, taking the brunt of it as he shouted, “Meila, go!” She didn’t need to be told twice, coiling herself under the bellies of the others and shooting towards the tree line. He’d find her later. These ruffians needed dealing with first.

Unfortunately, “dealing with” other dragons became a regular occurrence. He and Meila were both grown by the time he finally secured them a solid place in the Forum, and they had hatchlings of their own by the time he had a reputation that painted him not to be trifled with. Meila was a force unto her own, of course, but he so rarely allowed her the opportunity. The Tangled Wood wasn’t known for its kindness when it came to the unprepared.

“You know,” Meila began one night, watching a hatchling idly waddle his way across the floor, “You never have told me your name.”

“Maybe I don’t have one.” He responded, cracking an eye open to look at her.

“Maybe I should give you one.” She responded, a wicked grin gracing her features. He sighed and rolled his eyes, pushing himself into a sitting position and joining her in watching the only hatchling still awake.

“I have to say, I’m rather afraid of what you might come up with, Meila.” He chuckled, a deep rumbling noise, and she laughed in return.

“Shush.”

“Excuse me? I do believe you’re the one who initiated this little conversation.”

“No, Shush!” She perked up, “That’s what I’ll call you.”

“Shush?”

“Well, you always say it so much. Plus, you’re always so shush yourself.” She batted his nose with a paw and he wrinkled it, drawing back slightly but smiling nonetheless.

“So Shush.”

“Mmmhmm, Shush.” She crossed and coiled herself around him, placing her head at his front feet. “I think it fits you perfectly.”

“Whatever you say,” He chuckled, shifting himself and her so he could lie down once more. The stray hatchling waddled his way over and sat against Meila, a bubbly giggle rising from his mouth. Shush grinned. “Sleep now, little one. It’s time for quiet.”

Meila snorted, “See?”

“Oh hush.”

“No. Shush!”
