The Scribe
The Scribe
Skald is one of the Starfall Isles’ most talented craftsdragons. Originally a scribe, he first came to the Lundlaevungar to write down oral poems composed and recited by Bragi and Edda, and to make a neat copy of Saga’s ongoing record of the clan’s history. However, as time went on, he developed his calligraphy and began to decorate his pages with ever more elaborate borders, illuminated initials, and even illustrations. Eventually, he learned bookbinding so that he could properly reproduce longer works himself, without needing to find or order a blank book in the appropriate size, or deal with long and unwieldly scrolls. These days Skald’s illuminated manuscripts and illustrated tomes are held in the highest regard: his books are sought-after by collectors, and writers across Sornieth long for the opportunity of a commission. Yet it was not his work with the clan’s poets and historian that inspired him to develop his craft to this higher level. It was Daell. Their friendship was born out of Skald’s love for Daell’s stories and his desire to faithfully record them. As the two spent more time together to transcribe each of Daell’s nightly tales, their affection grew and quickly bloomed into love. At first, Skald hoarded Daell’s stories purely for himself, but it wasn’t long before the idea of these wonderful stories being scribbled in shorthand rankled with him. They became his practice pieces and over time Skald crafted them into increasingly gorgeous scrolls and eventually books as he mastered more skills and became an even more accomplished scribe and bookbinder. He presented each one to Daell as a gift. At first, Daell had his familiar describe the designs and illustrations to him, but as the two grew closer and became mates, Skald took over: sharing his work through description and, wherever possible, by texturing the pages. Despite the fact that he cannot see Skald’s efforts, Daell loves the closeness of these moments, when they curl up together to pore over the latest of his mate’s creations. These are among Skald’s favourite times as well. The couple are among the most devoted in the clan, and without doubt the most romantic. They regularly make time for night-time strolls in the Starwood Strand: Daell sometimes rides on his mate’s shoulders, and Skald makes sure to always describe the wonders around them as they pass through the trees. Though he lost his sight before they ever met, Daell insists on calling his mate handsome, much to Skald’s eternal (pleased) embarrassment. Skald meanwhile deeply admires Daell’s courage, and even if he does sometimes sigh at the frequency of his arguments, he is always there to loom behind him as silent support when he chooses to stand up for a cause. Their bond has only deepened with the addition of first Nera and then Kaerr to their family, and the two think the world of both their adopted sons. The reverse is also true, and never more obvious than when Skald partakes in his other, perhaps rather unexpected passion: speed skating. He was hatched into an Ice clan that valued speed above all else, and he spent his hatchlinghood pushing to skate faster, ever faster, in endless races against siblings and friends. He was never a winner, but that didn’t alter the thrill he felt when he flew without wings on blades of steel, a chill wind tugging at his mane and the creak and boom of the ice echoing beneath him. Though he packed away his skates when he moved to the Starfall Isles, he never forgot his first love. These days, Skald competes in Speed Skating at the Sornieth Winter Games each year to satisfy his innate need for speed. Daell and their sons always join the crowd to cheer him on, regardless of the outcome, with Nera providing Spiral-fast commentary to allow Daell to enjoy his performance on the ice. Though he cannot see Skald’s efforts, he is always the one cheering the loudest for him. Most would consider it ironic that a blind dragon is the source of Skald’s greatest encouragement, since he cannot see the results of his artistry or watch him skate. However, if anyone were to ask, Daell would say that it was simple: he can hear the joy in Skald’s voice when he speaks about his detailed ornamental work, the methodical process of binding books, or his skating, and wants to hear it more often. |
