When he pushed out of his egg (and promptly fell a foot or so to the ground), he was in the Wind territory. The lair that hatched him kept him around for a little bit, seeing as he was a greenie born on International Green Day, but didn't quite welcome him. He wandered off and got lost.

He spent days wandering around, looking for anywhere that looked the least bit familiar to him. He got hungry and eventually started to wander aimlessly, just hoping to find something. All the bamboo around him wasn't quite what he had in mind. He found a well hidden lair deep in the bamboo - he stole a few strawberries when he thought no one was looking. But he had been spotted - a brightly coloured skydancer tilted her head and called to him with a chirpy, birdish voice. He sheepishly came out of the bamboo, knowing he had been caught.

Kovidar, the skydancer, tucked him away in her part of the lair - next to the alchemist, where no one else really went out of fear of exploding goo (Kovi said it happened regularly and if he should get any on his fur, to quickly roll in the mud). He stayed there, happily eating what Kovi brought him, as she promised to bring him to the clan as soon as she could find the right time - the clan leaders were trying not to take in dragons right now.

On the third night of his stay, a pearlcatcher snuck up and started to peek through all his fur. She said her name was Ren, and that she was the resident Nameforger - she had sensed a dragon without a name and had set out to fix that. She concluded her search and pulled a scroll out from under her wing (how she held that and her pearl, he couldn't guess). A long list of names was on it - some crossed out, most not - she took out her pen (where had that come from?!) and wrote in scripty letters 'Tamal'. He had a name.
