"We may be Mirrors, but we are also of Water."

Saline, Part 1, Volume I
What can we do?
~
Continued from Rockpools Part 1
Dragons milled about in the hall just outside Rockpools' room. Some voiced their concern over the young drake, others didn't have the words. Saline was one of the latter.
The golden Mirror's blue cape dragged along the floor behind her as she trudged down the hall, paying no attention to the others as she passed them.
“Oh Lady Saline!”
She lifted her heavy head and saw a splotchy Spiral with big green eyes just ahead. Saline greeted the young dragon with a small smile. “Hello, Alyss.”
Alyss flew to her side as Saline kept walking. “What's going on with everydrake? It seems as though the entire clan is talking about something happening to Rocky.”
Saline felt all four of her eyes start to sting, but she quickly composed herself. “Yes, well...he's gotten himself into a fight earlier today.”
Alyss gasped. “Is he okay?”
“Yes...he should be fine now.”
“You know, I think I may have something for the cuts that Mud mentioned.”
“I see you've decided what you want to be,” Saline smiled.
Alyss returned the grin. “Oh yes! I really think the clan needs a drake who can heal. Especially after what happened to Rocky.”
“Thank you, Alyss.”
“It would be my pleasure, Lady!” the Spiral exclaimed as he darted away.
Saline was about to call after him, but then decided against it and smiled to herself. But the smile didn't last long.
She reached the gilded staircase and made her way down towards the main doors. Pulling them open, she slipped outside and closed the door behind her.
“Good evening, Lady,” two voices sounded beside her.
Saline was about to wish the pied Skydancer and the striped Spiral the same, but they interrupted her.
“I said it first,” complained the Spiral.
“I think you're mistaken,” countered the Skydancer.
“Boys,” warned Saline.
“Sorry, Lady,” they both apologized, then glared at each other, the red eyes of the Spiral meeting the Skydancer's pink.
Saline turned to the Skydancer. “Astraeus, report.”
Astraeus stood tall, and he shot a triumphant glance at the Spiral. “Clear skies tonight, Lady, and not a danger in sight.”
Saline sighed. “Good. Aerico?” she asked the Spiral.
At the mention of his name, the Spiral puffed out his skinny chest. “Nodrake would dare mess with the clan as long as I'm here.” Aerico grinned maliciously at Astraeus, who ruffled his feathered wings in response.
“It's so nice to see you two keeping your rivalry at a minimum,” Saline said, frowning. She flared her grey wings slightly when she saw them begin to protest, then shut their mouths in defeat. Satisfied, Saline strode away from them and the castle, and sighed again when she heard them whispering threats at each other.
When Saline finally reached the shore, she sat on her haunches in the sand, letting the sea lap at her front claws as she stared straight ahead.
There was a mighty splash as a large grey and green shape suddenly burst from the water ahead of her, but Saline didn't move as it came bounding towards her.
The grey shape was laughing. “Now that was incredible! You should see what's down there for yourself!” Kelpbeard roared excitedly, and paused when he noticed the expression on his mate's face. “What's wrong, dear?”
“Rockpools is injured,” Saline said simply.
Kelpbeard stared at her, his blue eyes wide. “But he's fine now?”
“Yes. He's...fine.” Saline didn't take her four eyes off of the horizon.
“Dear?”
Saline didn't speak for several moments, but her quivering jaw betrayed her. “I don't know what happened, I wasn't there, but he...I think Rocky is...” Tears threatened to spill from each blue eye.
Kelpbeard moved closer and sat behind her, placing his front paws at the Mirror's sides. “Did he say what happened?”
Saline sniffed and blinked back the tears. “He said he attacked another. He said he doesn't remember doing it.”
Kelpbeard remained silent as he let his wife continue.
“I thought that story I'd told him and the others was just a story. The one about the savagery of the first Mirrors and the curse turning Mirrors of different elements against others unwillingly. After Rocky told me what he'd done...I don't know if it's just a tale anymore.” Saline ran one paw across he eyes. “I don't know what to do.”
“Maybe Alyss could help. He spends so much time studying herbs and...such...he could be the drake to help Rocky,” Kelpbeard comforted her. “And Alga is always locking herself in her room with her books, she may also know something. And curse or no, I believe somedrake will find out what's going on and why.”
“I hope you're right,” Saline sighed deeply.
Kelpbeard stood up and stepped back. “I know what'll cheer you up.” The grey Guardian moved in front of her view and grinned, stepping back into the water and lifted a massive paw.
Saline widened all four of her eyes. “Oh no, don't you—”
But it was too late. Kelpbeard had brought his paw down into the sea and sent the splash in Saline's direction, soaking her. He roared in delight at her horrified expression.
Saline then narrowed her eyes and smiled wickedly.
“You see?” Kelpebard laughed.
“Now you're going to get it,” Saline said as she leaped after him into the water, splashing him as they laughed together.
Mirror and Guardian played in the waves until sunset. When sea and sky glowed orange, they stepped out of the sea and sat on the beach beside each other, watching the sun sink.
“What did I tell you?” Kelpbeard asked. “Nothing beats this, eh?”
Saline leaned against him. “It is beautiful. But we can't ignore what happened to our son.”
Kelpbeard deflated. “I know, love. I just couldn't bear seeing you that way.”
“I know you just wanted me to be happy. And...thank you,” Saline smiled up at the Guardian's grey face.
“Of course, dear.”
