Since the moment he could think, Owen has only known of one emotion: rage. They say that during his hatching, his egg exploded out of pure hatred for the shell that confined him.
The dragons in his old Fire clan used to pity Owen. They believed that such anger came from his soul lashing out from the loss of both his parents, who died in battle shortly before he hatched. However, even as he grew older, Owen often threw violent tantrums of fire and talons spurred on by the tiniest irritations. Hatchlings refused to play with him out of fear he would hurt them, and adults grew wary of his uncontrollable temper.
The elders put him through warrior training in hopes that the rough conditions would set him straight. Owen had difficultly adjusting at first, but he quickly adapted to honing his body and magic in a controlled yet lethal way. Before even reaching adolescence, he rose to the top ranks among other revered fighters in his clan. But unfortunately for his clanmates, the elders' plan backfired. Instead of cooling down into a humble warrior, Owen evolved into an arrogant, self-serving monster with the same fiery temper as before. He looked down on the weak, and upon realizing that most members of his clan could not defend themselves, he abandoned his clan on the spot.
The elders refused to accept his decision. They sent scouts to track his location and consulted the Arch Mage for a solution. After some research, the Arch Mage concluded that in order to quell Owen's fury, he would have to seal off part of his soul carrying his anger into a non-draconic animal vessel. The ritual required Owen to remain within the same area. In order to stall someone of Owen's strength long enough for the ritual to work, they needed the acting leader's Guardian, the most revered warrior of their clan, to fight him.
Once the scouts returned with information on Owen's whereabouts, the Arch Mage and the Guardian set out to find him. They found the Nocturne taking residence in a humble crevice near the Great Furnace, hoarding stolen food and aggressively defending his abode. The ensuing battle lasted hours. Several times, the combined might of the two's magic would rend the ground into volatile lava that disrupted the Arch Mage's ritual. The heat was intense enough to sear wood into ash in an instant. Explosions sent powerful tremors that threatened to erupt Fire's sacred volcano itself.
As both parties grew exhausted, the Arch Mage finally found enough time to carry out the ritual in full. He pulled out the vessel, a mock firebird familiar, and released it into the air. The firebird glowed a brilliant orange, and the fighting ceased. The smoke cleared, the lava stilled, and Owen was stuck staring at the familiar in a daze.
The Arch Mage reconvened with the Guardian and asked Owen how he felt. Owen didn't respond. The Arch Mage assured him that the three of them would return home together, to which the mock firebird squawked, "Live in a home with you losers? Who do you think I am!"
The clanmates stared in shock. Owen snapped out of his daze, spat vitriol at the two of them, and took flight with his new companion. The clan members would never know that despite the ritual's success, their plan would have never worked—for there is not one part of Owen's soul that isn't simmering in pure anger. Not only did Owen retain his personality, but the part of his soul that was supposed to lay dormant within the mock firebird awakened out of sheer rage.
The event left Owen with a familiar that named himself Blaze. Despite possessing his own separate consciousness, Blaze acts as an extension of Owen's will. In addition, because the ritual split Owen's soul in half, his original power is now shared between him and his familiar. The two are always seen in combat together because of this.
