ASTAROT
Strategist | Business Leader

Unlike many other coatls, Astarot takes more after the serpentine nature of his species and is shrewd and cunning, and occasionally cruel. As a fledgling he learned that others could be placated with gifts and toys, baubles to sparkle in the sun. This grew quickly into learning just how much it would take for someone to be won to his side, and in time, how little he could manage to give away. If a person could be bought, Astarot would find a way to buy them.

His enemies--because he made many of them--said that his coloring suited him. He was a devil snake, blood coating his throat and stomach, a sure sign that the misfortune of others was the only way to sate his appetite. He cared not for their words. They could not hurt him.

Many whispered in the marketplace that he did not sit a nest because no right thinking dragoness would have him to lie with. Rumors flew that he was vicious at nesting, all claws and beak, force and blood and little to do with affection. That he'd smashed eggs he did not believe would grow strong. That he'd taken hatchlings--hatchlings! With no names!--to the stones of the Tidelord and drowned them, rather than a proper sacrifice!

He heard the stories. He didn't correct them. The drake would prefer to be feared. It mattered not that he'd never fathered a nest, and certainly had no desire to drown hatchlings. Cruel he may have been, but the Tidelord had put some sense into the dragon's head.

Drowning hatchlings. Honestly.

Whether the skydancer had been in the clan when he made his way to Olympuswatch or not, he couldn't have said. Most of the clan avoided him if it was possible, and the few who spoke to him almost never met his eye. If he was honest, even he wondered why Mere had taken him in.

"May I?" a soft voice whispered from behind him, and he spun to see who had crept upon him so quietly. She took a step back, hesitant...but meeting his gaze.

"What?" Not perhaps his most eloquent answer.

"May I join you?" She inclined her head to where he was perched, and all he could do was watch the way the ice-white smoke seemed to trail over her feathers in a way he'd never seen before. The gene, yes of course, it wasn't that new but...with her body as dark as it was, there was something...

He noticed her cover her beak with a wingtip, hiding a smile. "What?" he came up with again.

"You're staring."

Now it was his time to feel his skin burn. "I apologize. Yes, of course. Please, join me."

She settled next to him, and he could almost hear the whispers start. Let them whisper. "I'm Cara," she said, turning that amaranthine gaze back on him.

A shiver snuck across his skin. "Astarot."

"I know."

The first nest was difficult--and it had nothing to do with him. (He was quick to point this out when the rumors started flying to Mere's ears--and of course, she believed him.) Birthing the eggs had been...truly, the only word for it was traumatic. Cara couldn't sleep, could barely rest on the nest at all for the nightmares and day terrors. Astarot never left her side.

"You are stronger than this, beloved," he said under his breath. "Whatever these fledglings are testing you with, you can persevere beyond it. I know it."

"It feels like fire," was all she could say. "Fire and blood."

As Cara trembled, so did Astarot...but for very different reasons. What have I done? Has my reputation made good on its threats, and come after me even in its falseness? Has I doomed the only dragoness to ever care for me...by loving her in return? Tidelord save her, take me if you must but let not my unknown sin destroy my beautiful Cara.

Most of Astarot and Cara's fledglings have grown now and moved on from Olympuswatch, though one or two remain. He himself has eased as time has passed--and his mate has had not a small amount to do with that as well. He still takes great joy in haggling prices and wheedling much out of little, and as such Mere often brings him with when she travels to the marketplace, because the coatl will spot a deal--or a daylight robbery--faster than any other.
“If I wasn't a devil myself I'd give me up to the Devil this very minute.”
