Biography
FIREBIRD EMBERCROWNE
Unassuming as he may seem, Firebird has gone through the greatest nightmare of all Guardians: he has lost his charge. When he first hatched, he instantly knew that his brother, Shadowborn, was his charge. However, Shadowborn left to search for his own charge, and Firebird was unable to follow. His failure to protect his charge has left him serious and melancholy, and the business with his first mate wasn't any help either. Although many of the Guardians in the Clan dislike him for his failure, some members of the Clan actually favor him over his parents, as they dislike the strong devotion Fireborn displays toward the Flamecaller. |
There was darkness at first. Then there was light, too much of it, as he scrabbled along the ground. There was a sense of belonging, of rightness, as the world clicked into place. And there was a hissing voice, cold and detached. The first thing Firebird remembered his father saying was, "Too bad he isn't a Mirror." Fireborn growled a warning to her mate. "Shadowbird." "What? It's true. What kind of Clan will it be if our children both leave to find charges? Who will be our heir?" Fireborn snorted. "More dragons will join us, Flamecaller willing. And the first Mirror we hatch can be our heir." "And what if the Guardians who hatched before them return?" "Nothing will change. You worry too much." Shadowbird was silent then, but when Firebird opened his eyes for the first time, he saw his father's lashing tail. His mother told Firebird that he was lucky, finding his charge right at hatching. It was easy, guarding Shadowborn; they were always together in the first place. Being Guardian and charge, for them, meant playing together, exploring the section of the Emberglow Hearth their parents had claimed. They didn't look much alike: Firebird took after their mother and Shadowborn their father—but they were brothers, nestmates, and most importantly, Guardian and charge. But as they grew, Firebird saw Shadowborn staring off at the horizon, looking somewhere past the Ashfall Waste. "What are you looking at?" asked Firebird, nudging Shadowborn with a wing. Shadowborn twitched his tail. He wasn't incredibly talktative, but he'd always been open around Firebird. This time, he paused. "I feel something," he said. "A pull. I think...I think it's my charge." Firebird stared. "So you'll be leaving soon?" "Yes," said Shadowborn. "I don't think I can stay much longer." It was Firebird's turn to pause. But the answer was obvious. "Well, then I'll have to come with you." Shadowbird was perched nearby, watching over them. Firebird didn't miss the way his tail lashed back and forth. His father approached him the next day. "Firebird," he said. "I have a mission for you." Firebird jumped to his feet. "What is it?" "I'd like you to welcome a certain dragon to the Clan. Her name is Mudsplatter, and she'll be our newest member. Apparently, she's the daughter of the Clan Leaders of another new Clan." Firebird cast a wary glance at his brother. But it wasn't as if Shadowborn would leave without telling him. He dipped his head in agreement. "I'll leave after telling Shadowborn," he said. Shadowbird stepped in front of him. Firebird, by now, was plenty bigger than his father, but he still stopped. "You won't be gone long," Shadowbird said. "And you shouldn't keep the daughter of a Clan founder waiting." "Fine," Firebird said. "Just tell him where I've gone." "Of course." Things with Mudsplatter turned out to be more complicated than expected, and it took them a month to return. By then, Firebird's brother was already gone. For a while afterward, everything was a blur. Firebird didn't know how Shadowbird had gotten Shadowborn to leave without him, and he never learned. He just knew that everything was wrong without him. He would have left to follow, but he never did. He hated himself for that. Even though Fireborn and Shadowbird hatched a Mirror heir, Firebird never followed. He didn't see the point, too busy wondering if Shadowborn hadn't wanted him to follow. He didn't remember much from that time. He remembered Mudsplatter, though. Tundras were supposed to be forgetful, a bit silly. Mudsplatter was quiet, serious, and calm, as was fitting for the daughter of Clan founders. She told him, once, that everything would be okay. When she said it, Firebird could almost believe her. But for now, for the first time, he was alone, alone, alone. |
