Biography

Arcane Runestone

Sansa
sorrow › guilt › magic

Sansa keeps to herself, for the most part. When she first arrived in the clan, the other dragons begged her to come exploring, to tell them about the faraway Starfall Isles, to show them the magic that Arcane dragons are so known for. She was never rude in her rejection, and even sometimes pretended to consider for a moment before letting the eager inquirers down. This continued for some time, but eventually, they stopped asking.

It’s not that she's antisocial, or that she doesn’t enjoy company. Sansa is simply unable to allow herself to engage in these activities, the ones she so enjoyed when she was younger. In fact, if Sansa were to accept, to fly over the deserts and seas and mountains just to feel the fresh air on her wings, to recount the joys of her youth and a time when she had nothing to be ashamed of, or, worst of all, to use her magic to make her life any easier or more enjoyable, she would simply be consumed by guilt. She can’t let herself feel that joy, not for even one second. Not after what she’s done.

Sansa was born in the Starfall Isles. Like most Arcane dragons, she had a natural curiosity, and a talent for sticking her nose where it didn’t belong. But she was clever, vibrant, and outgoing, and she quickly made herself known to the clans of the Isles as a promising young dragon who was eager to learn the magic of Sornieth.

When she came of age, Sansa was invited to study at the Arcanist’s Academy, the greatest school of magic in the land. This honor was extended to very few, and she was ecstatic. She set out immediately to pursue her future.

Sansa quickly proved to be an exceptional student of magic, even amongst the talented few who were invited to the Academy. She learned the basics effortlessly, soon moving on to study the more advanced magic, and was delighted when that came naturally as well. She was soon experimenting with her abilities, making up spells and enchantments of her own.

But power always comes at a price. News of Sansa’s success and abilities traveled throughout the Isles. While she only ever used her magic for good, one group of dragons saw the opportunity for something else. The Academy was ambushed. No one saw it coming, no one was prepared. The instructors did what they could, but they were simply outnumbered and overpowered. The school fell. The instructors kidnapped or killed, and the students held captive. A new regime was quickly instated at the Academy. Students were expected to perform dark magic which could be used to overthrow clans and steal their wealth and land. When students refused to perform, they were tortured until they complied.

Sansa held out for a long time. She used her magic to shield herself against the pain as much as possible. But they kept her isolated, unfed, and tortured her relentlessly, not even allowing her to sleep. Her body weakened, but her magic grew agitated. She could feel it churning inside her, and she poured her remaining strength into trying to hold onto control, but it was slipping away like water through a crack in a bowl. She held on until she was absolutely exhausted, and her magic seemed to bubble up and out of her like it had a will of its own. Overcome by the sheer power pulsing through her, Sansa slipped into blackness.

When she awoke, her captors were dead. Her abusers were dead. But those caught in the crossfire were dead as well. She was horrified, haunted by what she’d done. In her agony, she turned to the only thing she could think of to try to undo what she’d done: dark magic.

The thing about dark magic: you can’t just show up and try your best and expect your loved ones to be handed back to you at the end of the day. Dark magic can’t even be touched by any but the most powerful, most magical individuals. And even for those few, dark magic requires a trade. Resurrection, specifically, requires quite a large sacrifice in return. Sansa happened to be one of the select few who are powerful enough to access the darkest spells. Guided by her intense anguish, she handed herself over to the Darkness, bit by bit.

She actually managed to do it. She brought back the headmaster of the great Arcanist’s Academy. However, by the time she’d accomplished this monumental task, there wasn’t enough of her left to even remember the mission she’d set out to complete. Sansa was gone to the Darkness. All of her talent, power, and curiosity was strong as ever, but her motives had shifted. She brought terror to the Starfall Isles. She drained the light from the skies; the warmth from the air. She raised the rest of the dead from the battle, but not the way they were before. She brought them back as they were in the grave, cold and dead as stone, and enslaved them to the darkness.

The headmaster knew what had happened. He tried to stop Sansa, but she was simply too strong. He fled, knowing he had to find an answer. He flew to the great Citadel of the Isles, where he consulted with the Scholars. After much searching, they finally found answers, and they told him what had to be done.

With great sadness, he flew back to the Academy, where he knew he would find Sansa. Her army of the dead guarded her quarters. He had to get to her. Using all his strength and years of training, he let his magic radiate from him, let it envelope the reanimated corpses, guided it to surround the Dark magic inside them and compress it to nothing. The corpses wailed horribly, and by the time they dropped, inanimate, he was barely standing either.

Finally, Sansa emerged from her quarters, fury pulsing from her in waves.

“I’ll kill you for this!” She screeched. “I gave you your life back,” she moved towards him, until she was only inches from his face. “I think it’s time you returned it.”

His face was contorted with sorrow. “I’m afraid I have to.” He murmured with a sigh.

As he felt the Dark magic Sansa was directing at him, chipping away at his life, he knew this is what had to be done. He knew that once he was returned to the Darkness, Sansa would be released. She would be returned to the world of the Light. He knew she would never forgive herself for all the hurt she had caused, but at least she wouldn’t cause any more. As he slipped from this world, for the second time, he knew all of this. But he still clung to this world as long as he could.

The headmaster was right. When Sansa came back to herself, she was once again standing over his dead body. But this time, rather than the Academy being in ruins, her entire land was. She never forgave herself.

She devoted herself to putting the Starfall Isles back together as much as she could, using only good magic this time. But truthfully, her people no longer wanted her. The magic they had so admired in her as a young dragon now brought fear more than admiration. So she left. She flew as far from the Isles as she could get. She settled in Clan Valimar, and they accepted her. They never will know her full story. But they know enough.
