A child of the Earth honors their ancestors, and he was no different. His parents’ legacy was senseless violence, and he embraced it, nurtured it, bid it blossom and grow inside his chest. He was raised on tales of a grand arena, place of champions, and he trained and dreamt of fighting rings. He named himself a holy warrior, Vigilant of the Earthshaker, and set out in search of glory. And in the ring he thrived. With each victory, the Earthshaker’s name (and his own) spread. Nevermind that his opponents were injured and starving, nevermind that they stepped into the ring in desperation (or, worse, not of their own will at all). He was their champion, avatar of the house- and everyone knows that the house always wins. Until it didn’t. The ring was eventually raided and shut down, its other participants rescued. He fought for the place he called home, ferociously, but he’d grown complacent, too used to showboating around half-dead competitors. He was subdued and his benefactors, more than happy to let him take the fall, fled. These new masters believed in something strange: they believed in peace, healing, goodwill for all dragonkind. Vigilant found them weak, pathetic fools, and took the first opportunity to escape. It was laughably easy, the fools didn’t even pursue him! He didn’t realize that he’d run straight into the one place they wouldn’t follow, deep into the Cairnstone Rest. Even he could tell that the creature he found there was something ancient, something powerful. It spoke to him, in his mind, “Tell me, child, what you seek.” Power, he said, and strength- and as soon as he spoke he could feel it, feel the ancient magic of the Earth flowing through him. But the creature paused. “...to protect those you love?” For vengeance, he cried, and in that instant he felt the magic turn sour, the blessing warp into a curse. The magic solidified into crystals sharp enough to rend flesh, and the ancient wyrm told him this: “If it is a heart of stone you so desire, a heart of stone you shall receive.” His is not a normal gembond infection. The wyrm was not nearly that cruel. If he were to leave well enough alone, it would not threaten him, and the ancient one even allows him self-defense, if the occasion should arise. But each time he brings harm upon an innocent soul, the crystal grows, its point driving itself deeper into his ribcage. He rages against his restrictions, went on a furious rampage until the weight and the pain became too much to sustain it. He wandered Sornieth, distraught, no longer able to support himself with mercenary work. He heard rumors that the scientists of the Pointe could halt gembond disease, and came to the town hoping for help. Unfortunately, the curse was a distinctly magical ailment, and all he received was Elysia’s mockery, a rabid dog bound on an invisible chain. |
