The coins clink through his claws, click, clink, clunk, counted carefully into the lockbox. Some have tried to cheat Aurelius before but it never works. He can tell by hearing if a coin is false or a gem flawed - even with more unusual currencies it all has to pass his inspection and his inspection is precise. It would be easy to call him greedy, he knows. Easy to dismiss his interest in the gold and the glitter to greed, to attribute how he tends the clan's hoard to his own personal satisfaction and he's not so much a fool as to deny that that does play a part. There is a satisfaction in tending this hoard, in seeing it grow, in knowing it will be used to serve the whole clan. Everything of worth that enters the clan passes through his fingers. Everything of worth that leaves it too. No one judges as well as him - and when people might cheat them, when people might hurt them, he must be there to guard them against that. |

People think he's a coin-counter and little more. People think the money is his only cause. They forget, he thinks without malice, that gold is what they use to buy what they need, that gold is what they receive when they sell what they can trade and he might be the arbiter of what comes in or out but he is not so simply mercenary as driven by money. He trades, yes. He barters hard, yes. He challenges those who would haggle his clanmates down, who would lie and cheat and steal because, yes, it serves the clan's coffers, but it serves his clanmates too - in keeping the clan wealthy, certainly, but also in knowing that they are cared for, that they are defended, that he will never let them be cheated. Some are sceptical and certainly, he will find a cause for every little thing he buys and sells, will find a way to get more money out of something most might find little value in - but he will find cause to buy little trinkets too, trinkets made with little effort of cheap materials, because a hatchling's smile is enough cause and while some may say his heart is as cold as his gold and hard as his diamonds it isn't so. It's never so. There is value in all things, Aurelius thinks, but most of all in happiness. |
