I know I haven’t spoken to you in a while, but perhaps you can take a moment to hear my cries. I’ve been having trouble sleeping lately, and the storms have hidden the stars from my sight--I feel quite lost without them. In daylight hours, I cannot sit still, but not with energy like usual. I’ve felt tangled, lost, filled with a sense of dread and anxiety--being a spiral I’ve never been good at unraveling things. To sum things up, I have felt utterly off, for lack of a better word. I know I cannot ask you to fix things, you taught me long ago that you will only guide me in the right direction and not solve my problems. Perhaps, though, you will listen for a moment, as I try to refocus my mind.
I want to thank you for some things, as sometimes I find they have gone unappreciated both by me and others. I’d like to thank you for fireflies, the way they flicker and flash as they dance through the sky like faries. As I watch them rise from the oasis--they were brought here by Shivani ages ago--I can’t help but wonder what song are they dancing to? Do they move to a beat we cannot hear? In some way, they remind me of stars; perhaps you intended them to be stars originally, but they flew too fast for the eye to see so you had to shrink them, to let us watch. Regardless of your reasons for fireflies, I want to thank you for them. Hallow keeps jars of them in his room, feeding and caring for them with the same patience he gives his maps. They keep him grounded, and sometimes when I cannot see the stars, he will release them to the top of his lair and we will lay on the ground and make new constellations. My favorite is “The Bees”, courtesy of Shivani; just look into the sky, you see those lights? Those stars? Congratulations, you have found the bees.
That is another thing I wanted to thank you for--bees. Yet another tiny creature with so much life and complexity that even my large eyes cannot see. I’ve watched Shivani and his coworkers before, curled in the rafters of his greenhouse as I wait for the stormclouds to thin so I can watch the stars. The way they move, always humming and buzzing with energy, in perfect synchrony to one another, it’s positively fascinating. I’ve watched them blanket the ground, the plants and the flowers, always buzzing and moving just enough to be visible to Shivani. Their loyalty to the pearlcatcher is quite startling, but in some ways, I think they see him as their queen. I want to thank you for their existence, the way they bring vibrant life to the desert despite our harsh homeland. The way they allow Shivani sight--I’ve seen the way he brightens when he can see the shape of his clanmates. I want to thank you for bees.
I have many other things I would like to thank you for, but I shall only speak of one more for now--I find my eyes dropping and Asymeth is surely waiting for me. I’d like to thank you for music--it’s intangible beauty has granted light to the lives of many of my clanmates. In the late nights, when I am wandering the lair with Asymeth for no reason, I have heard the soft, melodic voice of ShadowedGhost. Though I don’t linger by his lair, I have heard enough of his voice to know he sings to his mates, a gentle tune that beckons them to sleep when they find themselves plagued by nightmares. I’ve seen the way they look at him as he sings, as if his voice brings a sense of purpose to their chaotic world. I want to thank you for allowing them that, their life has been a struggle. There is also the matter of Varan; I don’t know if you have ever seen him as he sings, but I do believe that is what you meant music to become when you made it. For Varan, music was always his life, and it continued to be without his hearing; in fact, it became more of him when he lost his ability to hear what he was making. His face, his posture, his aura… as he strums his lute and sings his lyrics with eyes fixed on his instrument. He never sees the peace he gives others, but I wish he did. Still, I thank you for giving him the chance to find his life in song, I thank you for music.
Universe, I know I am but a pebble among a riverbed to you--small, insignificant, easy to overlook. However, Asymeth recently said something to me, and it prompted me to write you this letter. We had gone to the Oasis where Nantis and Elspeth met, we swam and talked and curled around each other in the sand. She plucked a stone from the riverbed, running her paws over it before handing it to me; it was nothing special, just the typical stone. However, she smiled and nuzzled me gently, whispering words I will never forget. I guess, Universe, I want to thank you for Asymeth, and thank you for me. I belong here.
Sincerely yours,
Nexus.
P.S. Asymeth said to me: “This may just be a rock, but it is the only one like it. No other rock has that same shape, the same composition, the same colors and scratches and history. No other rock is that rock, and isn’t that beautiful?”

Nexus The Astronomer |
Having explored some of the more populated areas, you now seek out some peace and quiet from the grinding noises and sparking of machinery at work. You follow a side path, it is smaller and thinner than usual, and you notice an intricate star design carved into the wall. Finally, you reach a door, or rather a curtain made of silk with small stars decorating it, hiding behind it a mess of charts, trinkets, and observational objects. On a desk in the middle of the room is a spiral dragon, lying asleep curled around a half finished chart of the stars. "Hm? Oh,"The spiral yawns and stirs, "G'morning! Or, evening? Who knows, my name is Nexus. Ironically I'm the astronomer, who apparently can't even tell the time!" The spiral gives a friendly grin and rises to his stubby feet to listen to whatever you have to say. |
Origins
A Note From The Author
Dear Universe,While typically, I would write these brief biographies and personality summaries with my own hand, I have had an unusual request. Nexus came to me, quite politely considering I nearly snapped his head off, and asked to write his own story. Below is the result of that. Sincerely yours, Midnight (The Scribe) I grew up in the snow and ice of my home, a sickly child who would get tangled in the frozen bushes. When I left, I went to the bone dry desert of the Shifting Expanse, an environment completely the opposite of my home. Despite these differences, there was one consistency in my life. You. The Universe. You've made so many things, done so much work, created the life and objects in this world that I have lived with. Of course, some are not as brilliant, the pit fall in the desert that trapped me for days being one of them (though Nantis and his kind heart was a good introduction, as he did save my life). However, Universe, I wanted to thank you for something that has been in my life since I was only a hatchling, the stars and the heavens. I am an astronomer, as you know by now, and I watch the heaves--your heavens--with an intensity only I could ever know. I thank you for those, the stars are my guiding light that led me to the Flyers and continue to guide my wings in my life. |
Personality
This is once again written by me, Midnight
Nexus is a true spiral, plentiful in energy and spunk up until the moment where he is out of energy, where he will then collapse to sleep. For the most part he is nocturnal, generally spending the time he is awake during the day sending his mappings of the stars to Hallow in order to properly finish the map. During the night he sleeps sporadically, otherwise gazing into the sky to map, locate, and name the stars and constellations above. Nexus' office is the opposite of his orderly maps: his copper instruments and used parchment are always scattered over the tables and desks, only his completed maps and records remain safely stowed on the shelves. As a mate to Asymeth, the blind seer, he is a gentle and useful friend, always willing to assist her when she is struggling but never taking her independence. She puts up with his sporadic work hours only due to his tenancy to curl around her to sleep, though she jokingly threatens to kick him off every time. His mannerisms are typically polite, though he tends to start and stop sentences quite strangely. Despite this, Nexus has managed to make friends with a wide variety of dragons, though he avoids those who consider themselves above other dragons. As seen from his previous writing, Nexus is what some would consider "religious" though he does not believe in an alternate god to the Dragon Gods. Instead he chooses to believe in the Universe, a thing above his imagination that built the world and many more from it's own will. He can often be found writing about these thoughts, though he has yet to share many of them.
