There is no such thing as a guardian dragon without a charge, but what of a guardian who has removed such a concept from the equation? Unbound is one such dragon, a guardian confused and enraged by the thought of being mentally linked into servitude of another being by a greater force. Born into the tangles of the Wispwillow Grove, Unbound, then known by a different name, led a quiet life with her charge, a male guardian of a nearby shadow clan. Day in and day out she would feel the need to be by his side, chase off anything that came close to him, destroy anything that threatened him. She would sit and watch him with growing resentment as he tended to his own charge, a shrine made of stone dedicated to the souls lost in the woods in ages past. Why had he been granted something without life to protect while she had been stuck with something so reckless? He was constantly brash and racing headlong into danger, leaving her to fret and worry over his safety, unendingly intolerant of her pleas to tone down his actions and allow her a moment of solace. After many long years of mounting anxiety over his wellbeing and watching other dragons live their lives without so much as a care for a 'charge', the guardian knew in her heart it had to end and that it could only end one way. On the next night of a new moon she stealthily approached her charge for the final time as he slept upon his bed, peaceful and serene, and put a stop to her suffering once and for all. Or so she thought. The overwhelming grief that struck her in the moments after she took the last of his breath shook her to her very core, for she knew she had failed to protect the one thing that her entire being told her to. The one thing that made her who she was. Who she was however, was a slave. As the guardian woefully fled into the heavy mists, never to be seen by her home clan again, she reminded herself she was finally free. Unbound by the cursed shackles that gripped each and every one of her species, she would finally be able to live her life for herself. |
