Biography

Γανυμηδης
Gladdening Prince
"GANYMEDE was a handsome, young Trojan prince who was carried off to heaven by Zeus, or his eagle, to be the cup-bearer of the gods. Ganymede also received a place amongst the stars as the constellation Aquarius, his ambrosial mixing cup became the Krater, and the eagle Aquila. Ganymede was frequently represented as the god of homosexual love, and as such appears as a playmate of the love-gods Eros (Love) and Hymenaios (Marital Love)."
"In Olympus, Zeus granted him eternal youth and immortality and the office of cupbearer to the gods. All the gods were filled with joy to see the youth, except for Hera, Zeus's consort, who regarded Ganymede as a rival for her husband's affection."

"[Ganymedes] was the loveliest born of the race of mortals, and therefore
the gods caught him away to themselves, to be Zeus' wine-pourer,
for the sake of his beauty, so he might be among the immortals."
— Homer, Iliad, Book XX, lines 233-235.[3]

Ganymede used to be part of a small family of farmers, when one day Zeus came upon him and found him too beautiful to lead a farmer's life. He begged Ganymede's parents to allow their son to join his clan, and after some amount of bribery, they agreed. After Ganymede was initiated as one of the gods and granted his title and immortality, he was quickly showered in fine silks and jewelry, and was given the job of cup-bearer to the gods, which he found boring and a bit degrading. While Ganymede was much adored by his new clan, he felt lonely and out of place, especially with everyone staring at him all the time. He felt there were little who looked at him for his personality rather than superficial things. Still, he got to know all of the gods around Olympus fairly quickly, and after awhile he befriended the Erotes, the handsome gods of love. Eros told Ganymede that he could easily set him up with someone, but Ganymede refused- nothing Eros suggested seemed right.
One day, some of the ocean gods came to visit the main portion of the clan in Olympus, mostly so that Poseidon and Zeus could catch up and talk politics. Poseidon brought his son, Triton, along with him, but Triton quickly grew bored with his father's all-business discussions, and started looking around the main hall. Ganymede, of course, was there pouring drinks for Zeus and Poseidon as well as the other oceanic guests, and many of the ocean gods were commenting on the beauty of Zeus's new cup-bearer. Ganymede rolled his eyes and tried to stay in the shadows a little bit, so he wandered off to the side of the room a little bit. That's where he and Triton met. Triton, too, commented that he hadn't ever seen Ganymede before, but his next comment wasn't immediately about his looks. Ganymede's interest had been caught, and Triton and Ganymede continued to talk to eachother for as long as Poseidon and Zeus held their conversation.
Eventually, it was time for Triton to accompany his father back to his watery realm, so Ganymede gave him one of the pieces of Lapis jewelry he'd been given to wear: a necklace, to remember him by. It would be awhile before they met again, and Ganymede began to wonder if Triton had forgotten about him, but sure enough, the next time the ocean gods dropped in to catch up, Triton came straight to Ganymede's side, still wearing the necklace he had given him. Ganymede was touched, and after a few more meetings, he confessed his love to Triton. He was afraid that Triton would react negatively, but Triton beamed with happiness. Triton confided that after their first meeting, he had known that Ganymede was meant to be his Charge, but he didn't want to say anything to Ganymede for fear of scaring him away. Overjoyed, the two entered a relationship, and Ganymede happily recounted the news to his friends, the Erotes, who shared in his joy.
Even though Ganymede must remain on Olympus and Triton must remain in the sea, they visit eachother often, and both have never been happier.
