Biography

Thanatos Cidolfus

Thinking back to days long past... wrote:
"Where's papa going?" Thanatos is a young dragon, living in a bustling harbour-side town, standing in the doorway of the house his mother owns, watching his father's back as he heads dutifully down the cobbled pavement.

"He's returning to his duty at sea." Says Emeline Cidolfus, wrapping one wing around her son to guide him back over the threshold as he leans forward to catch one last glimpse of his father before he's swallowed by the crowd gathered along the street for the opening of the evening markets. "He keeps us all safe, fighting off sea monsters that want to gobble us all up!" Her tone switches from withdrawn monotony to bright and playful in less than a second as she prods Thanatos' side with one claw.

Thanatos squirms and bats her away. "I'm gonna be just like him when I grow up." He insists, tipping his chin up to look his mother in the eyes. "I want to protect others, too."

"Thanatos, my darling." Emeline smiles at him, though her eyes betray a certain sadness that neither of them quite yet understand. "You can be anything you want to be."

Past
Thanatos' young years were mostly happy ones, spent with his mother Emeline in their little port city. His father, Carlisle, was often absent, instead focusing on his job as a ship's captain, defending the city from monsters and invaders via the ocean. His parents bickered often when Carlisle was home, eventually leading to a huge blowout argument when Thanatos was still quite young, in which his father stormed off, never to be seen again by either of them.

Emeline became quiet and withdrawn after that, barely able to lay an eye on her son, who reminded her so painfully of the carefully tended love she'd had for his father, which had now rotted from the inside out, giving way to a deep-seated bitterness and hatred that she couldn't help but take out on her son, despite the fact he'd done nothing at all to deserve it.

Thanatos quickly grew to believe that his mother now hated him, and that the separation of his parents was somehow his fault. He spent much of his time brooding to himself in his room, trying to puzzle over what he could do to fix the previously-perfect relationship he'd had with his mother.

Thanatos' beliefs were cemented when, one day, their small town was invaded by a wretched band of pirates, who had come to pilfer valuables and steal away other dragons to sell as slaves. His mother, when confronted by the rogues seeking to take someone from each household away, looked Thanatos up and down disparagingly, sneered and informed them that he was entirely useless, and to take her away instead.

That was the last time Thanatos ever saw his mother. That incident isn't something Thanatos talks about often (if at all), and he refuses to believe that his upbringing has anything to do with the toxic traits he now exhibits.

Thanatos left town quickly after that incident and sought to become a part of one of the smaller clans that dwelt in the wilds of the world. He was found by Reaper and invited to join the hodge-podge clan of dragons living at the base of a cliff in the Tangled Wood.

Thanatos seized the opportunity to leave behind his past and threw himself headfirst into what he construed as 'helping', though to everybody else, came across as 'being a headstrong control freak'. He fawned over Reaper, vying desperately for her sole attention, though she never returned the favour.

Years passed, and Thanatos slowly sunk deeper into his borderline-delusional mindset of 'always knowing best' and refusing to listen to the opinions of others.

Present

Thanatos had his fortune told some time ago by a dragon with a dubious grasp on actually being able to tell the future, and was struck with inspiration, recalling all the fantastic stories he'd heard about his father when he was young. He set about gathering a crew to piece together the vision he had in his mind - a great pirate ship, but one that wasn't constricted to only land or sea.

With countless hours of hard work, his dream of 'The Reaper's Tempest' was slowly brought to life. Named after who he had dubbed to be the 'love of his life' Thanatos invited her aboard to go on swashbuckling adventures with him across the land.

To nobody's shock except Thanatos, Reaper turned him down, quite ungracefully, leaving Thanatos with a ship capable of bringing down all but the most powerful of beasts, but nowhere near enough crew members to operate it.

Future

Thanatos basically becomes the roving sky SCP foundation, taking down beasts and imprisoning dragons who he deems to be 'unsafe to dragonkind' - though he can never seem to bring himself to exterminate the sentient ones.
