Shegrasi

26205-4.png

Previously a tundra, Shegrasi is now an obelisk of immense size. Short carmine fur has been replaced with thick skin and scales. Dark scars accentuate a body used to constant exercise and battle. Their full, silky mane is soft and reflective, often being mistaken for fire. Their falcon markings are black, covering their entire face and claws, creating a caricature of mask and gloves. Black sclera have replaced the previous white, and an eerie green gaze glows from yellow eye sockets. Sharp white fangs poke out from upper and lower jaws, clearly intended for piercing damage and creating an intimidating smile.

Shegrasi's left eye, damaged in battle, has an impairment that creates shadows where there are none. In response, Shegrasi is constantly checking his surroundings, ever wary of ambush or thieves.

Shegrasi does not care for clothing, feeling that most cloth restricts movement too much to be practical. The exceptions are a rainbow scarf with frayed edges, a cracked citrine pendant, and a rusted gold crown, all of which are extremely sentimental gifts from friends no longer living. For work, Shegrasi wears a leather satchel with a fitted harness to keep it from jostling during flight. A sprite with a floating crown is imprinted on the satchel, and several bottles and pouches are attached to the harness.

Shegrasi first made ends meet by traveling all over Sornieth completing bounties that required tracking. Early on, these were mostly material-type bounties, fetching hard to find ingredients for alchemists and merchants. Later, they became more dangerous, and Shegrasi became more skilled at fighting. One bounty was for hunting down an escaped criminal, and Shegrasi tracked them to Starwood. This is where they first found Sagoastra, and they stayed only long enough to heal.

After turning in the bounty, Shegrasi decided to stop for a while and returned to the hidden clan in the wood. The leaders were happy to give Shegrasi refuge for a while and gave them a job helping to organize the growing clan. The leaders, Timithius and Fireshade, had never planned to have a large clan, and only built room for their family. When more dragons happened upon the clan and asked to stay, they welcomed them, but weren't prepared for the responsibility. Shegrasi suggested using the clan's treasury to hire some builders, and helped stake out a spot in the territory for the new lair. Once things were under way, Shegrasi left again, feeling the itch of adventure and travel.

Nearly a year later, Shegrasi returned to a much bigger clan. The hired builders had worked day and night and completed all the necessary dens for individual dragons within the first month, then they worked on meeting rooms, research labs, and other necessary areas. Shegrasi returned to find them placing wall stripping in a large underground area meant to be the new records room. The small clan would have trouble filling it for a while, but eventually it became an amazing library that drew even more residents.

Shegrasi left and returned several more times, always feeling at home in the clan and always happy to help out with work, leadership, anything, but never feeling like it was the right time to settle down. Soon enough, the clan reached ancient size, and Fireshade was getting old and cranky. She had so much energy though, that no-one in the clan expected her to announce her retirement so soon. When she did, everyone was shocked, more so because she insisted that Shegrasi be the one to replace her. At the time, most of the residents hadn't considered the bounty hunter a member of the clan; only a visitor, so it didn't make sense.

Timithius explained it more clearly; he and Fireshade had just wanted somewhere safe to start their own family. They hadn't realized they were one of the first to settle that deep in the forest, or that having their clan there would open a new trade route. They hadn't been prepared for leadership, and Fireshade, being the more charismatic of the two, had assumed most of the responsibility, but answering petty squabbles between the merchants and researchers was wearing on her patience. She just wanted to raise and protect her family in peace. A large portion of the burden was lifted every time Shegrasi came to visit, as the bounty hunter seamlessly assumed the detailing and organization as if they were meant for the role, always making quick, calculated decisions before immediately moving on to the next task.

By this time, it had become tradition for the whole clan to meet every evening for a "family" meal. It was then that Shegrasi announced to everyone that they had decided to settle in the clan and help as much as possible, but that no dragon could really shoulder the burden alone and they would appoint others to help organize each area of the clan. The dissenters were content with this and the meal turned into a bit of a celebration. A couple coatls staying in the clan decided to present welcome gifts to the new leader and unintentionally set a precedent. When other dragons moved to do the same, Shegrasi made it a point to thank each one personally. One of the gifts was a rusted crown dug up and cleaned by one of the hatchlings earlier in the week.

The hatchling, young and excited by the activity, insisted on placing the crown on Shegrasi's head, using a tuft of mane through the middle to ensure it would not fall. The hatchling then had Shegrasi swear not to take it off, much to everyone's amusement. The residents began calling them King Shegrasi after that, mostly as an inside joke, and later, the group formed to help manage the clan became known as the High Court of Advisors.

Shegrasi spent a lot of time interviewing chefs and cooks looking for someone with the necessary experience and skill to cover a wide range of diets. While most meals can be picked up during the day or night whenever dragons get hungry, the tradition for everyone to meet for Supper never went away, and it is the thing that visitors tend to remember most; the whole clan spending time with each other and making everyone feel welcome.

Shegrasi never gave up bounty hunting, and occasionally leaves the clan for short trips to neighboring territories, bringing back gifts and news from the outside world. The majority of maps provided to the library arrive in this way. Shegrasi has traveled to nearly every subregion of Sornieth on various jobs, and enjoys exploring new territories and watching other clans' ways of living, using this knowledge to improve living conditions and organization in Sagoastra.

Shegrasi's fighting style is atypical in that they prefer melee to magic. This is uncommon in tundras, but with a background as a bounty hunter, stamina and endurance were often more important than magic. Shegrasi can use several medium-level spells, but has low magic reserves and relies on physical power instead. The King's favorite spell happens to be one called Swift, which is a specialized wind spell that decreases air resistance on the user.

True to tundra nature, the king is known to welcome strangers into the clan as if they had been there before, even being known to say "treat every stranger as a friend; every friend as family". Unknown to most, even while smiling and making friendly conversation, they are planning ahead, tracking everywhere each visitor goes and planning the best way to defeat them if necessary. The King's friendly nature only goes so deep, and they are quite terrifying when truly angered.

Shegrasi fears few things, but among them are water and ice; not the flights, but the physical substances. Shegrasi takes great care to avoid getting wet or having to fly during any cold or wet weather. A few members of the clan like to imagine the king as previously being a ridge back, but Timithius has a theory about the scent-blocking ability of water, and Shegrasi's reliance on scent in the absence of perfect sight, but without the King's cooperation a true diagnosis cannot be reached.

Shegrasi, being a wind dragon, enjoys collecting Tiny Feathers and maps, and organizes them meticulously in their hoard.

Shegrasi has an incorrigible sweet tooth, and often keeps a small stash of 1st Anniversary Leaf Cake and honeyglazed Miniature Potash Peachs. As the clan physician, Timithius insists that too many of the clan's members contribute to this bad habit and insists the king eat more Gradishs and Spinach.

Nochnyr ¤ Red - Familiar
Red was Shegrasi's first familiar. Like most creatures Shegrasi adopts, Red had been abandoned on the side of a road, tied to a post and left to wither away with the elements. After rescuing the odd creature, it accompanied Shegrasi on bounty hunts and was a decent fighter. Although it never spoke, only managing to make shushing sounds, it did seem to understand draconic very well. Red is currently deceased.
