Esmé, known to most as Sister Pestilence, has served as a devoted servant to the Plaguebringer herself for centuries, working alongside her loyal Sprite. She distinguishes herself by no brand or trial, but all in her presence can feel the force of command she musters. She resides in the Hellwell Undercroft, quartered in the highest point of its great skull, rot-infested wooden temple to the Plaguebringer, but the devoted Sister is not just a priest - she is a general, guiding the hand of the Exalted as they aid Mother in her fight for domination of Sornieth. There is no warrior alive, no exalted conscript or visiting mercenary, who would dare openly question the Sister.

These days, Pestilence is rarely seen outside of her duties. She administers trials to the most esteemed of Necromancers, visits the Wyrmwound regularly to observe the ley lines in its fetid waters, and defends the Undercroft when the need arises—but most of her time is spent in meditation, seeking guidance from her god on where her path leads next, or studying maps and plotting paths. Her Sprite carries things for her when she declines to leave the skull, delivering messages and bringing food.

OVERVIEW
Sister Pestilence is reclusive, but not out of a distaste for company – she simply has better things to attend to. She has made her home in the Hellwell Undercroft for ages uncountable, since the structure was first built and designated. When she is not overseeing other clans there, she wanders the Boneyard, conducting esoteric investigations for the Plaguebringer.

HISTORY

Rumors abound as to Sister Pestilence's origins. Some say she was an experiment by the Plaguebringer, to create a perfect servant. Others whisper that she was an abandoned hatchling that the god took pity on and brought under her wing, blessing her with incredible powers and immunity to all her Mother's diseases. Still others claim she was once a perfectly normal dragon, but once exalted, she rose through the ranks until the Plaguebringer was forced to take note.

In truth, all are half right and all are entirely wrong. Esmé's story begins almost with the tale of the Scarred Wasteland itself, back when dragons were just beginning to establish themselves in the twisted land. She was once a Mirror pup, hatched from an egg left in an abandoned camp. For most of her early life she was nearly feral, eking out a living in the Abiding Boneyard, and rapidly developing her survival skills. Constantly on the move, as was her breed's wont, Esmé learned to hunt, to fight, and to scavenge out materials to make herself a shelter.

It was on one such run that she came across a city of dragons. The large gathering was a far cry from the lone scavengers or fellow feral Mirrors she usually ran across, and she was utterly fascinated by it. While she had never even learned proper Draconic, her survival instincts decided that this was simply another challenge to be overcome, and so she threw herself into learning the ins and outs of this new world with her typical fervor. It was in this city that she was given her first name, Pest – not such a negative moniker in the Wasteland, she was always underfoot, working and surviving and taking for herself. Quickly, Pest took to this designation and began to make a name for herself.

It was here that she learned of the god that ruled her land, and saw the dragons awaiting exaltation. Such a story ignited within the young Mirror a feeling she'd never before had the chance to experience: she found herself wanting to serve. Surviving for herself, devoting herself to her own merits, was all well and good, but when she saw firsthand the power, and heard of the goals of the Plaguebringer – survive, spread, become great – she determined she would be a part of them.

But Pest was not content to simply accept one of the lowly tasks afforded to typical exaltees, no. She wanted something greater. To place herself at the side of Mother, to become one of her great generals. So she took to training with her fellows, her already-gained skills and her sheer determination quickly raising her above the rank and file. It was from both her trainers and the other students that she was given her second name – Esmé, or Esteemed.

While Esmé had already placed herself in front of her peers in physical prowess, she found her interest turning to something else – magic. Mages as the rest of the dragon world think of them are uncommon in the Wasteland, but there are other kinds of magic that can be done. To cure meat and make it edible, quiet monsters, craft diseases that mere immunities could not guard against – Esmé knew this was the way to raise herself even further. So she sought out that training, even though it was not in her curriculum; she fought her way through magic like she had every other challenge.

When the time came to make the journey out from the city on the outskirts of the Boneyard, all the way to the Wyrmwound, Esmé found herself anticipatory and impatient. She quickly grew frustrated with how slow her non-Mirror exaltee companions were, already used to bounding long distances on her powerful legs. At the time, she had no idea it was the last trip she'd ever make as a Mirror.

At the Rotrock Rim, the exaltees were sorted into new jobs, and assigned tasks befitting new recruits. But when the dragons in charge of this process heard from the older trainer all of what Esmé had already accomplished, she was moved to something of higher standing, placed on duty guarding something of significance.

Even this was not enough for Esmé, however. She fought her way higher and higher, doing whatever it took to gain the next spot above her. It was during this process that she underwent the transformation into a Skydancer, abandoning her physical power for more magical ability and the invaluable sense for her enemies' feelings and intentions. With these added advantages, she soon found herself at one of her greatest, barely hoped-for dreams: an audience with the Plaguebringer herself. It came on one condition, however – first, she had to undergo one final test, one set by the god herself. She must face down a disease of the Mother's own making, one crafted specifically to her, and live. The test's purpose was twofold, as she would learn – the disease was also meant to mimic the powers of the Gladekeeper's children, and she would serve as the first to be immunized against them.

Esmé survived and passed this test, but at a cost – her wings withered and rotted, becoming like tree branches, and fungus sprouted from her back like a carpet. The information would prove invaluable to the crafters of disease, but she cared little for that. She had passed this test, and now she wanted her promised reward.

The meeting was brief, as all are. The Mother of Disease has better things to do than waste time speaking with her servants. But she got what she was ultimately after – the recognition of the god herself, one of the ultimate highest positions and responsibilities, and the service and companionship of Enza, her faithful Plague Sprite. She was also given the title of an acolyte, the highest rank of servants, and would be henceforth known to all as Sister Pestilence.

More time has passed since then than most dragons can count. Perhaps the disease she survived granted her immortality, or the incredibly long lifespan associated with some of the Gladekeeper's plants. Perhaps the Plaguebringer intervenes to keep her alive, not wishing to lose too soon a valuable servant. Whatever the reason, she continues to live and serve as well as she had when she first took on the role – better, perhaps, with the extra experience of age under her belt.
