Tika is a yakshi, a type of nature spirit similar to a dryad, that guards the Tree of Knowledge. The original Tree of Knowledge on the island of Ohara was destroyed by the World Government, which killed her mother, who had been the guardian before her. But enough of the Tree's vast network of roots survived that Tika was able to coax a new tree to begin growing again, and when she and a few other children who had taken shelter underground with her were rescued, she brought the new sapling with her to another island.

Now, Tika lives with her adopted sister, Ari, who is descended from the Kujas of Amazon Lily, and the two of them live on a small island of their own, safe from the World Government, who would kill them if they knew any other Oharans survived the destruction of the island.
