Kerria

The Arborist
"Just tell me what herbs you need, Natalica, and I'll get some going in the garden."

Kerria had been a quiet, curious hatchling, watching her small family go about life in the Everbloom Gardens, only once there was a quiet time asking about how something worked, or if she was doing something right. She followed every guest like a small white shadow, asking questions about what it was like where they were from, what kind of creatures there were, what the sky was like. She made mock expeditions around the pools with her older brother and their parents chuckled. Their daughter seemed destined to explore the world, so they packed her lunches and brought her with them to market whenever they could.

Not long after coming of age, she paired up with another local Nature imp named Orion to become travel buddies. Orion wanted to see the eleven Natural Wonders of Sornieth; Kerria wanted to find secret beautiful places. She was meticulous, planning their supplies and the best routes to take, finding the tiniest flowers in the underbrush. He was gregarious, charming everyone they met, telling jokes and stories that made the trail never dull, no matter the weather.

First the gemcaves of Dragonhome, then the fluorescent mushroom forests of the Tangled Wood, and the seaglass grottos of the Sea of a Thousand Currents. While resting in the paradise-like oases of the Shifting Expanse, the two decided to commemorate the first half of their trip with a nest, leading to their single daughter.

It was after the blue fire pits of the Ashfall Wastes and their visit to the Twisting Crescendo that she got the news her brother had died in service to the Gladekeeper.

She was struck numb and left Orion in the Windswept Plateau to return home to attend his funeral. They'd been such close friends as their parents' only nest; she'd sent him letters from every place she'd visited so far and it didn't seem real that he was gone. But the last tines of his antlers were cradled in this tiny box in her mother's paws and his ashes scattered in a garden he tended in their old clan.

She spent her free time in that garden, weeding, picking out pest bugs, or watering the flowers with her tears. It was a way for Kerria to remember and honor him, and the garden quickly spread beyond the walls he originally set. She planted winter's delight on the outside of the stone walls for the clan hatchlings, winterbelles and stellaria medias for courting dragons to take, and peace lilies and myosotis to honor her brother in particular. At the center of the garden, he had started growing a potash peach tree: still too small to bear fruit, but an effort that had clearly taken several years. And may the Behemoth rot if she was going to let that effort go to waste.

She became gardener for the clan quickly, in charge not only for her brother's plot but the grounds of the clan as a whole. She held a special fascination for the bugs that scuttled under plants, zooming jumping spiders and smooth balled-up pillbugs. They are so fast for creatures so small and she made it a contest for hatchlings to safely catch as many kinds as they could. With her Imperial-long life span, she watched the little ones come and go, but her garden only ever grew bigger, that little potash peach tree becoming a tree big enough to shade even her entire massive body.

Then the storm rolled through her clanlands. The typical heavy rain was accompanied by an electrical storm the likes of which hadn't been seen in centuries, and a lightning strike split the potash tree from crown to trunk. Even though she had recovered from her brother's death many years ago, the loss of a tree she'd spent so long nurturing was devastating. But the clan druid gave her a gentle wise reminder: like our spirits, trees do not die quickly. And sure enough, as she watched, the tree put out runners, smaller sprouts linked to the first one's root system. Even though the main trunk was damaged beyond repair, Kerria poured magic into those saplings to help them grow. Ultimately, she took it as a message from her brother that it was time to move on. She uprooted two of the saplings, putting them on her shoulders to grow until she found a new home for them, and had a local artisan turn an undamaged portion of the trunk into a medallion to wear.

It was time to resume her wandering but this time, she'd take it a little slower. She hadn't gotten to the Sunbeam Ruins with Orion and it was so close by. She gathered some seeds and with the trees on her shoulders, set out for Light territory. There were so many tucked away ruins, little ponds and clearings amidst the massive forests. She's found others who enjoy secret places in Siderea, Earthdiver and Garafran and another naturalist in Lily at Clan Mediasolis and is planning to make this her new home.
