Biography
"Visitor, I'm afraid you must be lost. None but myself are allowed down here, save those I keep."
|
The nameless clan has taken care of many threats to the Ashfall Waste over the years, some large and looming like a threatening shadow over the entire region, others carried out in such secrecy that no one outside the clan ever heard a whisper of it. But one thing in common in all of the clan's work is thoroughness. When they've taken care of a threat to their region, they ensure that it will never be a threat again. For that reason, deep in the lowest basements of the clan's hidden lair, is the arcane prison. And the ruler there is Metatron, the jailer. Soft-spoken, fastidious, and feared, the quiet Imperial rules with a deceptively iron fist. The occupants of the prison are varied, from dragons to Beastclan to magically spawned monsters. Some have worked dark magics that sent their death away, flying on black wings out of the reach of anyone. Some would be more dangerous dead than they ever were alive. A rare few are even kept alive because of a moment of the clan leader's kindness, or more commonly by her cold justice, a sentence carried out on those for whom death would be too kind. All are bound there by powerful spells and locks, maintained daily by Metatron's magic. Some parts of the prison seem normal, barred windows and locked doors. But the deeper in, the stranger they get, ranging from fences of humming crystals that make the air between them shimmer, to forbidding obsidian pillars, in which it's whispered the unfortunate occupants are sealed, awake and conscious, kept alive by magic. Some are stranger and more forbidding yet, experimental magics that Metatron crafts, to test on misbehaving inmates. The majority of them try not to catch his ire, or even his attention. He is always quiet, always reasonable, almost gently disappointed when he inevitably catches a planned escape attempt. Under his soft chastisements, inmates cringe, even believing themselves deserving of the punishment he inflicts. An exact fit for the crime, he believes. Neither an iota more or less. In turn, he dispenses rewards for what he deems good behavior, but never a crumb more or less than deserved. He is utterly fair, refusing to play favorites and holding no grudges. He is by turns feared, placated, hated, and beseeched. Metatron spends much of his time in the prisons in the depths of the lair, rarely socializing with others of the clan. The binding wards must be scrupulously attended to, and not allowed to weaken lest they fail, and the prisoners must be watched for signs of escape or rebellion. When he does, he often finds himself speaking to others unaware of his role (not an unusual thing for a clan who carries out so much clandestine business.) To them he comes off as a measured, perfectly polite gentleman. His speech is a little clipped, and he is a touch cold, but he is pleasant and amicable, if not overly friendly. But all too soon, he excuses himself. He has his work to return to. ~by Mirrorstone |
