a painter and sculptor who rose to stardom in his hometown and fame in the big city.
finding himself lucky enough to achieve this during his life rather than posthumously as most others, he spends most of his income offering patronage to other virtuosos. though considered somewhat eccentric, he is well respected by the art community. chavannes is convinced by a mutual friend to patron spleen and ennui. he is instantly enamoured by the duo, and instantly despised by other artists who think ennui and spleen nothing more than amateurs. chavannes pledges a great deal of time and money to them, and in turn receives a friendship like he's never experienced, encroaching upon perilous loyalty.

chavannes is considered the most level-headed and reasonable of the three artists. ennui, haunted by nefertati and her inclinations towards destruction, has become more withdrawn and prone to violence against those that look disdainfully upon their craft. chavannes is grateful for both his physical strength and logic in being able to pull ennui from a literal knife's edge.
