She had grown accustomed to destroying monsters.

It had taken months, years even, for Shadow to find her true calling. The Wildclaw sprinted through the dense wooded area as she tracked the beast. Despite the speed at which she was traveling, her breathing was even and her stride confident. An overturned rock and broken twigs let her know she was still on the right path, at the most a few hours behind her unfortunate quarry. A less experienced dragon would have turned around, assuring themselves that the beast would not return to terrorize the clan after it being chased miles and miles away from their den. But Shadow was much too experienced to be fooled by some creature running with its tail between its legs. She had learned the hard way that most beasts will return no matter how far you chase them – especially when there’s a promise of an easy meal.

As she ran, the Wildclaw allowed her mind to wander back to when she first joined her clan. It had been a mistake, or so she had thought. She had been an unremarkable Spiral then – her scales dull and monotonous. Abandoned by her previous family, Shadow had been involuntary left to wander the Seared Wasteland for weeks. She barely survived the hellish landscape, arriving on the shores of the Sea of a Thousand Currents with only a shred of breath in her broken form. The Plaguelands were not known for being merciful, yet through sheer willpower and determination the dragon had been able to traverse the barren landscape and make it back to her native homelands.

Exhausted and broken, Shadow had collapsed on the sandy shores of the sea. Her lithe form coiled as tightly as she could manage, partially hidden in the sand. There were no words to express the way she felt about seeing the familiar waterfront and hearing the call of seabirds. The Spiral awoke from her bone-deep slumber to the soft, honey-sweet voice of her new clan matriarch, Reina. Shadow’s belly filled with the dark tang of fear as the other female introduced herself. Months of crawling through the desert and encountering many a malicious foe taught her to be wary of other dragons, but she could gather no more strength to run from this new enemy and only lifted her head slightly to acknowledge the other dragon’s presence. Reina merely continued talking, settling herself down on a nearby rock and chattering about her day. She prattled about the weather. She gossiped about neighboring territories. And she even regaled Shadow with stories about the Tidelord and his many adventures. Through it all, Reina had snuck the injured dragon with sips of water from her canteen and strips of jerky from a pouch at her hip. Shadow was unable to stop herself from drifting in and out of consciousness, but every time she woke up – the Matriarch was still there chitchatting about something new, like recipes for oarfish.

Day turned into night and still the Spiral lay on the shore, comforted only by a strange dragon and the sounds of waves. It seemed like an eternity before Shadow was able to roll over lift herself into a shivering crouch. Her muscles protested fiercely, cramped from staying in one position for too long. Reina materialized on her right and Shadow could feel the stranger’s arms guiding and supporting her. With the matriarch’s help, the wounded dragon had been able to reach the safe confines of the clan within a few hours. There, nestled deep within the Tidelord’s realm, Shadow began the arduous process of healing. As soon as she could, the Spiral had begun contributing as much as she could to the clan’s wellbeing. She hadn’t seen Reina much after her arrival in this new crew, but she worked as diligently as she could to repay that matriarch’s kindness. If it hadn’t been for Reina, Shadow would still be on that sandy shoreline – her bones bleached white by the sun.

A guttural cry brought the now-Wildclaw’s mind back to the present. She stood on a low ridge, staring out at the flower-ridden valley below. Her quarry, an unfortunate toridae, stood face-to-face with an atrocious Molten Wartoad. Shadow winced as the giant amphibian released a bellowing ribbit. The sound should have been harmless – when have you ever been scared of a frog? – but when it comes from the maw of such a colossal beast… well, it’s far more intimidating. Despite the new challenge, Shadow’s stern countenance erupted in a grin. Not only would she be praised for destroying a monster who continued to ruin the clan’s crops and livestock, but she’d gain even more favor by returning with the hide of a Wartoad – especially a molten one. Within moments, she was back in the trees in an attempt to reach her prey before they disappeared back into the vile holes they came from.

As she ran, her mind returned to her beginning. Shadow had toiled tirelessly within the clan for weeks before Reina pulled her aside. The matriarch had taken note of the dragon’s fierce determination and infallible inner strength and had deemed her worthy to become the clan’s warrior. Reina approached the Spiral with a single question – would she be willing to change everything to protect her clan? Shadow had looked into the matriarch’s eyes and knew that this her now her home, her life. She answered without hesitation and with all her heart – yes. Reina pulled scrolls out of her hip pouch. They shimmered with magic in the unfiltered sunlight, causing Shadow to blink in utter surprise. She had seen scrolls like them before, on rare occasions. She did not know what they were for until the matron pressed them to her hide and muttered a few incantations. The transformation was immediate – a brilliant flash of light filled the lair and there was a second of terrible itching. When the dust settled, Shadow no longer had her serpentine form – she was now a Wildclaw, Sornieth’s fiercest hunter.

Within days, Reina had her hunting beasts larger than she was – a great change from merely skinning what other dragons brought back. The battles were difficult at first; Shadow had the challenge of not only learning a new skill – but learning one in a completely different form. Her early attempts were clumsy, mostly filled with learning to move her bipedal frame correctly. Weeks passed before the Wildclaw earned her stripes, tracking down and destroying a mighty Roc who had dared venture into the clan’s territories. She had her share of defeats, but they only taught her how to succeed in future battles. And now – now Reina allowed her to hunt alone, fully confident in Shadow’s abilities to return home victorious.

The trees opened up and the ground leveled as the warrior shot into the valley. Surprise was her greatest weapon, as the toridae and wartoad were much too engrossed in one another to realize death was on their doorstep. Shadow slashed at the toridae first, digging her teeth and claws into the easier of the two. A blast of heat, followed by the loud roar of a fireball, had her rolling to one side. She left the toridae in the grass, deader than a doornail, as she fixed her sight on the Molten Wartoad. The amphibian returned her glare before launching its massive form. Clumps of dirt and weeds flew in the air, the silence of the valley punctuated by grunts and growls of two mighty champions battling. When the dust settled, Shadow stood victoriously over the lifeless body of two monsters, her claws dripping with ichor. Her breathing was ragged and her hide covered in shallow lacerations, but the look in her eyes could light up an entire city.
She may have stumbled upon such a loving and supporting clan by chance, but she was no longer the crippled wyvern who had limped into the lair on the shoulders of their matriarch. Shadow was a warrior now, and there was nothing that could stand in the way of the safety of those she loved.

Now all she had to do was drag her elephantine spoils back home.
