Researcher, Damage Control

"I said you could do it only IF you caused minimal damage. THIS IS NOT MINIMAL!"

Originally a researcher from the Observatory, Harmony went into exile with her twin Vanya after attempting and failing to recreate the Shade. Nobody in the clan is quite sure what happened, but it’s a given that the Arcanist wouldn’t banish someone for doing anything Shady, so the exile is probably self-imposed.

After doing some serious digging, Vespera determined that Harmony actually used to be one of the personal assistants of the Arcanist. Why she would choose to leave her role despite committing what’s really a very small crime in the Starfall Isles is another matter altogether.

Now, instead of serving the great Arcanist, Harmony’s task in the clan is mainly damage control. This is usually considered impossible in an Arcane clan, ninety-nine percent of whose foundation is built on damage, and... well, it’d be great if she somehow managed to break through the unseeable barrier that is the Arcane Flight’s reckless pursuit for knowledge and disregard for consequences, but nobody’s managed to stop the clan from blowing up every four hours. In Harmony’s defense though, that’s better than the clan being blown up every four minutes. She’s really trying her best.

The two dragons that give her the most headaches when trying to do her job are the clan alchemist Muffin and her brother Vanya. The two of them are enough of a migraine when acting independently, but together, nothing less of all eleven gods raining their wrath down on the clan will stop the two, and even then, the lair would still probably get caught in the crossfire and explode.

That being so, Harmony’s damage control usually focuses on keeping the two apart. While Muffin will blow things up regardless of who she’s with, Vanya won’t, so stopping them from working with each other is a good precaution. At the very least, Vanya’s notably less harmful when he’s on his own, and Harmony can usually keep him in line with a good scolding. Regretfully, there isn’t much she can do about Muffin, but one explosion is better than two.

WRTHpQQ.png In an attempt to keep those two fiends under even more control, Harmony, backed by Ma'at, suggested that the clan create a research team. This was a benefit in several ways, as the clan actually has things to research on, and getting Vanya and Muffin to focus on those things instead of explosives isn’t a bad idea. Unfortunately, Harmony underestimated Muffin’s ability to explode things while doing useful research, so the research team has become less of a restraint and more of an enabler to those who prefer to make things go boom chemically.

The one benefit of this was that Valenya couldn’t stand to see perfectly good research material end up as bomb fuel and became the unofficial leader of the research team to help Harmony beat some sense into the clan’s two wayward researchers.

The reason Harmony can serve as damage control is, obviously, because she can control damage better than others. Well, “control,” in the “I will hit you and then keep on hitting you until you stop doing the thing” sense. This is extremely effective on Vanya and completely ineffective on Muffin, but the fact that a small Fae like Harmony can box like a pro is pretty impressive by itself already. Rumors say she personally received training from Demeter. But to be fair, if she had, then she would be able to knock Muffin out.

Aside from doing damage control, Harmony’s still a researcher of the research team, and often does her own less fatal and damaging experiments on the side. She’s responsible for most of the clan’s successful research topics, though she still hasn’t figured out where the weird music in the ventilation vents comes from. If she had to guess, it’s just the wind blowing through the airways and coincidentally causing a sound that likens to music. Either that, or there’s some kind of ghost trapped in there, but that’s not really her area of expertise.

She knows quite a bit about the world from her time at the Observatory, and is always happy to share her knowledge. Most of the time, this knowledge motivates her clanmates to do things more stupid than what they would’ve originally done, but it’s still less collateral damage than what goes down in the research team’s laboratory.

Even for a Fae, Harmony’s quite emotionless. She’s mostly focused on her work, and remains composed even when beating the stuffing out of Vanya. She prefers to use her fins to communicate, which means only other Fae in the clan understand her, and will act quite exasperated when being forced to converse with those who don’t understand Fae-speak. This isn’t because she thinks Fae are superior, of course, but there’s only so much Fae-speak one can translate into common draconian, and it usually doesn’t end up sounding right anyway. She’s frustrated, but there’s nothing that can be done. After all, there aren’t many Fae in the clan in the first place, and asking her clanmates to learn Fae-speak seems too much of an overkill.

Ever since arriving at the Aequitas Clan, Harmony has found herself occasionally plagued by the thoughts of her failed Shade experiment. Everything about the experiment was destroyed, of course. She’d seen to it herself. But sometimes, she secretly wonders if something had survived amid the chaos. There are times she gets a queer feeling that something dark is very near, and closely watching her...

Once upon a time, two eggs were abandoned.

It was not unusual for dragons to do this, for sometimes, abandonment meant a better future for the eggs, especially if the parents had no intention of taking care of the to-be hatchling. And besides, the Arcanist was happy to be able to take care of his extended children personally. The god was reliable, and thus, he often woke up with an abundance of eggs at his doorstep.

(Warning: Just because he's eager doesn't mean he's good at it.)

He may have left them near radioactive material more than once. He may have once tried to fry them up for omelettes (thank the gods he has capable assistants to remind him). He may also have attempted to experiment on them, or use them as a disco ball, or a piñata, and so on.

Let's just say it's a miracle the eggs hatched at all.

They hatched on the same day, the two eggs, bearing one Fae with purple wings, another with wings of a dark blue shade. At a young age, both siblings expressed an intelligence that surpassed their superiors, and magic that did the same - despite having been quite literally microwaved several times as eggs. Because of this, the two quickly ascended in the ranking of mages and soon found themselves as the personal assistants of the Arcanist.

Suffused with pride and confidence in their abilities, the siblings thought themselves beings of an higher order. And perhaps, in a way, they were correct. There was none other save the god of magic himself who exceeded them in ability and know-how. Their savvies went to their heads, and they began thinking not just outside the box, but outside the dimension itself. They thought about the limits. They thought of how to eclipse the boundaries of magic itself.

And they did something far worst than death.

They summoned the Shade.

There were two things that they didn't take into account: first of all, being raised by the Arcanist near radioactive materials seriously messed with their brain cells and two: sometimes you try to end the world and get far less significant results.

It was the sister who first began thinking about exceeding the boundaries of magic. She was content with her job, but also annoyed, for as far as her knowledge and magic went, she was tasked with keeping the Arcanist from eating his own nose. Being the assistant of the Arcanist, she had access to books - many of them forbidden. You'd think that the warning label: "Danger, Do Not Read" would keep her away, but no, being an Arcanite, she did what any Arcanite would've done: read it.

As she turned page after page, the sister began learning of a wonderful magic none had spoken of before. She learned how to steal dragons' shadows, how to bring absolute darkness, and curses and hexes no Arcanite would dare cast. She learned about black magic, its potential, and its connection with the Shade.

To be fair, she would not have summoned the Shade had she not had the materials, but when her brother brought back an ancient artefact imbued with black magic, it was decided. They began preparing for the ritual, gathering the ingredients and spell needed. However, the Arcanist, well-aware of the siblings’ tamperings with black magic, stopped them and warned that they would lose all if they attempted to meddle with such forbidden arts. He took away their preparations, cut off their access to black magic, and left them in their squandered lab.

The sister was indignant. She thought, with much contempt, that the Arcanist just didn’t want dragons who were stronger than himself. The twins were both bitter that months of their hard work had gone to oblivion at one command of the god, and they thought hard as to how to evade such restrictions. They still had the dark artefact - the Arcanist had failed to notice it - and using it, they performed the spell.

A mistake. Their first of many. They did not notice a dark essence had been trapped within the artefact. The artefact was a prison, not a tool, nor a simple item that augmented spells. The entity inside had long dwelled in darkness, and the siblings, with a spell, released it.

Were they terrified by what they did? Did they repent? Yes, they were terrified - another mistake. Often times, a wild creature will only attack those who feared it, and the dark entity was no different. It tried to commune with the siblings, but they screamed at its frightful appearance, and thus angered it. Onto its summoners the dark entity went, and it did not show mercy.

By the time the Arcanist arrived, it was too late. The dark entity had destroyed the siblings. They were not dead, no, but it was a situation worse than death - they had been Shadetouched, for this entity was none other than a fragment of the Shade. Though the sprite was defeated in the end, the siblings were left with everlasting scars of darkness, reminding them forever that certain powers could not, and should not ever be tampered with.

Ashamed and subdued by her own actions, the sister fled the Arcanist's research center, convincing her brother to do the same. Since then, Harmony has been searching for a way to redeem herself, and hoping fervently that the Arcanist had, in the end, utterly annihilated her terrible creation.

Like many of the dragons in the Aequitas Clan, Harmony does not like to talk about how she ended up in the Runic Mountain Range, because she was definitely not looking for an extra-dimensional fabric of warped space teeming with vicious magical creatures. Also like many of the other dragons, she happened to land in Myrtle's garden, and believe me, that's one experience everyone can do without.

After banishing themselves from the Observatory, Harmony and her brother worked as free-lancing mages. After being (reluctantly) thrown into the Runic Mountain Range, they went to the dragon clan there to offer their services (and seek shelter from the seven herds of Longnecks they may or may not have somewhat irritated). Some dragons were delighted to see new faces. Others were not. Then there's Myrtle, who wanted to turn them into potato salad for stepping on her pumpkins. Nonetheless, the twins were received graciously, and thus, they began working for the Aequitas Clan.

No one told them to leave. It's possible they just fccot about the two. It wasn't like the clan was lacking in magic or knowledge, after all, so while the siblings "worked" for the Aequitas Clan, they didn't do much other than play the role of freeloaders. After a while, Pachetonas, deciding that it was annoying to have to trip over the sleeping twins in the hallway whenever she needed to use the outhouse, gave them dens in the lair.

And that was how Harmony became a part of the Aequitas Clan.

I thought the darkness was my ally
I thought I was born of the dark
Little did I know just how much
The shadows have corrupted my heart.

Now I'm in a nightmare
And my dreams - they've happened, come true
Have you ever lived a life of fear
Knowing what you've done; what you'll do?

I never said I'm evil
Never hoped to side with the dark
But now that I've seen what I've done
I can no longer tell evil and me apart

I lived my life for the light
Only to become the one thing I despise
Oh, how cruel is Fate?
I feel the Shade watching with evil eyes...
