The Storyteller

Uh oh! Looks like this little spiral wandered a little too far from her lair (122690, BananaDog), and now she's off to see the world! If ever you feel the urge to exalt, she'd really appreciate it if you could just return her home instead, or to the 'Dragons Off To See The World' thread, here.

Hope is daughter of Starrise, a dragon who belonged to a member's mother who passed away. It is especially important that Starrise's lineage is not exalted, as Starrise's former owner's daughter would like for her memory to live on in Flight Rising. Thank you. :3

Note: All her children with River are considered her children with Dream, her actual mate, in lore, but I breed her with River because their children look prettier.

hope: to never give up trust that goodness will prevail

A former traveler, Hope delights in weaving tales similar to her real-life experiences and retelling legends passed down from generation to generation. Her favorite story is of her origins, a mighty clan dissolving into legend with few dragons around to tell what had happened to it. Her mother came from the clan and has long since left to serve the Gladekeeper. She is proud of her heritage and believes in keeping that special clan alive through stories, songs and descendants of clan members. She has strong morals that she passes onto her children. She believes you should never repay evil with evil and to be kind to all. If she weren't a storyteller she might be a knight like her daughters, Faithfulness and Nobillity. Faithfulness, the elder, died on the battlefield and Nobility, the younger, left home to follow in her sister’s footsteps and to someday be as brave and selfless as her sister. She frequently writes letters with Nobility (Ili’s letters to her mother can be found in her bio).

Hope was first a traveler who spent a particularly long time at a certain tribe called the Endless Dusk. She met a handsome young fae named Dream shortly after arriving and, after falling deeply in love they had a nest of three eggs.
There was a Spiral daughter named Joy who was endlessly struggling learning how to fly, a quiet observant fae son named Patience and a Fae daughter who naturally excelled at flight named Peace. She and Dream raised them from the time they were hatchlings until they were fully grown with love, care and help from the willing tribe members. Eventually her children decided it was time to make their place in the world by finding mates and clans all over Sornieth. Hope watched each one of her children leave, and then left herself to continue on. But as she flew through the starry night and thought of the kindness the tribe showed her and her beloved mate, she realized that the familiar tug out into the world was gone now. Her very being felt tugged to a single place: home, where the tribe that now had become her own and her endlessly dear mate was.

Hope used to write letters with her daughter, Faithfulness. She was a traveling knight who was off to see the world until she came to an untimely fate in the Shifting Expanse. It hurt her deeply to lose her daughter but she knew that she had protected the innocent and served her duty for a long while and had brought joy to Sornieth. She still has most of her daughter's letters and reads them from time to time. The last one was crumpled and bore the marks of old bloodstains and more-recent tears. She used to hold it close to her at night as she mourned her daughter, but finally realized that her daughter did not live in those letters. She had a story, a legacy, that could inspire others and it was now her mother’s duty to tell it.

After much mourning Hope compiled all her daughter's letters for anyone to read. Her daughter's legacy is Hope's greatest story and, while often painful to tell, she feels a little bit of her heart patched whenever a dragon is inspired by Faith's commitment to righting wrongs and laying down her life for the sake of others and becomes a better dragon.

Faith’s original bio and letters are below.

Faithful: to be steady in allegiance or affection: loyal, constant
Nickname: Faith

tumblr_o1zrsv44JN1ufdm5xo3_400.png

Faith is a wandering knight with special lineage - she's the granddaughter of a dragon from an ancient clan that drifted into legend. She travels through Sornieth, righting wrongs, protecting the defenseless and helping others. She doesn't take any pleasure in wounding or killing her enemies - she only fights as much as she has to. Faith writes letters to her storyteller mother, Hope, about her adventures wherever she goes and often writes the friends she makes in other clans as well. When she's feeling down, a letter from her mother cheers her and makes her think of home. She knows her job is a life's work - as long as there is evilness and pain in Sornieth Faith must be there to combat it, but she does like to return home now and then for a rest. Faith doesn't really think of love because she knows a mate may distract her from her duties, but her heart is still in the danger of being stolen even if she doesn't pursue romance.

Note: She's the granddaughter of a Spiral named Starrise, the dragon that belonged to a deceased mother and FR player named Annebelle. Faith is a part of a memory project breeding dragons descended from Annebelle's so her memory will always be preserved online.

{Duskflower, 206701}

Mother,

I think I might start writing letters to you to keep in contact. I miss the Endless Dusk terribly, but to save lives and to right wrongs is my calling and I can't let selfishness interfere with it. I saved a hatchling from a Serthis today. It feels amazing, to save someone's life. To change a dragon's life for the better is worth every bit of homesickness or loneliness that comes with being a wandering knight.

I'm sleeping in a tree tonight. I never thought I would sleep in a tree - Ridgebacks belong in caves after all - but it's not altogether unpleasant. I believe there's a clan I can stay at a day's journey from here, so hopefully I'll sleep somewhere more comfortable. I'll tell you all about the clan when I get there. I wonder if I'll be able to help someone there...

I love you, mother, and miss you very much.

Your daughter,
Faithful

Mother,

Thank you for writing back - I'm glad to hear you're well. Life hasn't been going too well since my last letter; I had been wounded by a dragon who I caught committing unjust crimes, my neck clamped onto by his strong jaws in the midst of trying to catch him. He had been caught, but not without blood being shed. As a token of appreciation, the one who healed my major wounds had given me some armour for extra protection. The armour's rather old, but it may save my life one day.

It feels horrible not to come back to your familiar voice or the wonderful food you often catch after a hard day, but I find myself not completely regretful at leaving. After helping another, the friendliness in their eyes and the warm smile they will give me as their thanks fuels me with determination to save anyone in need. However, I look forward to coming home when I can. I love you, mother, and will hope for your wellbeing.

Your daughter,
Faithful

Mother,

I hope this letter finds you well and in good health. I've recently come across a lair of festive dragons who seem to have very few problems. I choose to stay due to unsavory circumstances; I caught two young dragons shoplifting, one of which could have been a hatchling. I confronted them. Alarmed and embarrassed, they confessed immediately and returned the stolen apparel. However, I felt their promises were not sincere. I brought them to their mother, who invited me to dinner. I have been here ever since. These kind dragons have offered me food, shelter and even more armour in exchange for keeping these adolescent gangs from causing any more commotion. The stark difference from between my arrival until now is astounding. I have scared these hatchlings with mere scolding. It looks like all this lair needs is some stricter laws. Once I finish drafting new laws, I will move on once more.

Your daughter,
Faithful

Mother,

I miss you, and wish I could ask your advice. You see, the clan I am currently staying in doesn't have strong opinions on justice. No. That's not quite true; after all, the Guardians of this clan take their Charges seriously. And I was welcomed to the clan quite courteously.

Yet when I speak of my calling and all that I have done to forward it, their response is... polite. No more. How can they be so stoic in the face of vast injustice in the world?

Your daughter,
Faithful

Mother,

It was a joy being able to be reunited with you and to talk to you all those long nights. I still can't believe you're telling stories about my little adventures! Learning about my bloodline was incredible - I can't believe I'm descended from a legendary clan. Thank you so much for wisdom, I feel that I can deal fair justice and kindness much more easily, no matter who I encounter. Seeing home again strengthened me. Seeing true good and the loved ones I fight to protect gives me heart, I feel like I can deal with anything...
I hope.

Your loving daughter,

Faith

Mother,

Now that I am back on my feet and resuming my adventures I can continue sending you these letters.
I now reside with the Knight's Brigade to whom I didn't so much as find as they did me. They're a brigade of noble and courageous dragons led by an imperial who has earned those titles thrice fold. He welcomed me with open arms when I stumbled upon them on one of their patrols. His second in command wasn't as welcoming, but within good reason. I wouldn't be so keen as to be very friendly with a person I just met a minute ago especially on claimed territory.

When I was allowed to meet the rest of the brigade I got to see many new and kind faces. Strategists, Warriors, Caretakers, Scouts, and Blacksmiths alike. I'm glad I found this bunch, I've learned of so many new things. I wish you could have been here to meet them as well. You would enjoy their company.

With love,

Faith

Dearest Mother,

I know it has been some time since I wrote to you, I apologize. My stay in the wind clan ran longer than I anticipated, perhaps distracted by the lovely music and the fluttering kites. For their part, my hosts were very patient with me, even though I'd been around longer than many of their permanent members by the time I finally departed. However, before I left they gave me a gift. I had a few pieces of armor already, but they gave me all they could spare to almost complete my outfit.

The combat trainer took me aside and told me that armor was good, but unless I knew how to defend myself, all it may as well be nothing more than fancy clothing. With his guidance, I learned even more ways to attack and defend. By the time I had completed the regimen after weeks of work, I felt much stronger, more powerful. Still, though I may be more able to fight foes, my skills will be used first and foremost to protect others. I left the clan eager to face the future, now with more strength to fuel my purpose to make you proud. I will always strive to this cause, no matter what power or glory I may gain.

Your Daughter, Faithfulness

Faithfulness was too busy to write letters as she stayed in the Cloudsong

tumblr_o1zrsv44JN1ufdm5xo3_400.png

After a long stay received an urgent call to the Shifting Expanse to stop a tribe of mercenaries who were killing and ransacking tons of innocent dragon villages. Their abilities were legendary, and no others had the courage to fight them. She flew there alone and sacrificed her life to stop the whole tribe single-handedly after taking them down one by one. She died peacefully, knowing all the training she had ever received was for this single purpose and that she was destined to stop them. Her death avenged the lives of at least a hundred dragons, and saved the lives of hundreds more. As she lay dying she murmured a few words of a healing spell. It kept her alive long enough to take a letter and a quill out of her knapsack and write one last letter that with the power of her very last breath was brought by a second spell to a courier:

Dear mother,

I'm sorry to leave you so soon, but I am overjoyed to have fulfilled my purpose. I saved more lives today than I ever dreamed I would. I thank all the clans that took me in: that gave me armor, and trained me, so that I could be strong enough to face the enemies of all that is good without fear and bring justice and peace. The story of my victory and death is the greatest one of them all and I can only hope that it inspires others to rise up in my stead. Keep telling your stories, mother, your stories of truth and hope and courage. Do not let your mourning tarnish your view of the world. Instead, use the story of my life to remind you that justice is something worth dying for.

I love you,

Faith
