{Lore}
Clan Dark-Blood's flag |
Within Clan Dark-Blood, there are some very distinct rules. First and foremost, though, is that Light dragons are not permitted on Dark-Blood grounds. It's an old rule, maybe even an ancient one, born out of one part devotion to the Shadowbinder, and one part prejudice that takes deeper root with every passing generation. Shadowblood has long embodied this rule, too. He was born into the heart of it, raised with it as his guide, his moral compass. Light dragons were a bane upon the Shadowbinder's soil, and there was no denying it, not now, not ever. When he learned to hunt, he learned how to hunt for rogue dragons that dared to cross into his territory, not just prey. And when Shadowblood learned the fine art of planning his next move, something he struggled with in his impulsive early days, he learned to anticipate what Light dragons might do when confronted, and how to account for their tricks. In his mind, the Shadowbinder needed his vigilance and devotion to keep her lands cloaked in shadow, like they were always meant to be. Anything less than a total refusal of the Light Flight was a failure to everything holy in the Tangled Wood. So he kept his word and refused to bend it. As he rose through Clan Dark-Blood's ranks, he enforced his views at every turn, despite the conflict it brought. His path to leadership was marked by a number of bloody duels, most spurred by Shadowblood's short temper. He regularly challenged those who argued with him to public brawls meant to prove his honor and strength, and very rarely did he lose. On those occasions when he was defeated, though, he still walked away with his head high, ultimately unbroken and already plotting a rematch for a later date. Few could talk him down from these fights, among them Freyja, his mate, but even then, they were not always successful. Sometimes, rage was stronger than reason. |
Clan Dark-Blood came to treat him warily after that. He'd earned his place as the clan leader, but he had yet to earn complete respect, especially since the clan had few allies in the wake of his ascension. But allies required trust, something he was slow to give. Only with Freyja's gentle prodding did Shadowblood finally acquiesce, agreeing to contact other clans of the Tangled Wood to establish alliances, and it was a difficult road. His reputation preceded him, and more than a few clans, particularly those less rigid in their worship of the Shadowbinder, refused his offers. More than once, Freyja and Truthseeker had to prevent him from declaring war just for being snubbed. Others, though, were more welcoming of his ideology, and with time, his relation to these clans grew strong. A clan known only as the Hunting Party was among the first to accept his advances, welcoming him with open arms. Soon after that, the Clan of Magmatic Flux struck a deal with him: if he provided raw metals retrieved from mining tunnels in the Tangled Wood, they would arm Clan Dark-Blood with finely forged weapons in return. It was a strategic deal, and with time, Shadowblood became steadfast friends with the other clan's leader, even going so far as to call the bond a brotherhood.
That brotherhood, though, saw shaky times when Borealis arrived.
Borealis proved to be the single exception to Shadowblood's ban on Light dragons. The young Mirror was discovered in the heart of the forest as a starved hatchling, so thin he could barely walk. Arlanna and Truthseeker managed to persuade Shadowblood to bring the hatchling back to the clan, and to set his prejudices aside in the name of mercy, which he did. However, he tormented the Mirror once he was healthy again, always threatening to banish him, always keeping him around only once he had something more important to worry over. Shadowblood never imagined Borealis had any worth beyond that of a punching bag.
However, within a few years, a debilitating sickness washed over the clan. Shadowblood was afflicted, though he refused to admit it, and while on a regular patrol to mind the borders for lost dragons, something he did as a favor to neighboring clans, he collapsed and failed to rise. The sickness was stronger than he was, and the only thing that saved his life was Borealis, who slipped out of the camp that same evening and came upon his leader. He had more mercy than Shadowblood had ever showed him, and without complaint, he carried Shadowblood home to be healed.
Since then, Borealis remains the only Light dragon Shadowblood has offered even a shred of trust to. Shadowblood employs him as the clan treasurer now that he knows the Mirror has a firm grasp of accounting, and on rare occasions, he sends him with supply convoys to be sure the pay is fair. But his pride requires that Borealis is ultimately kept a secret, and those clans which he considers his strongest allies are never to know of the Light dragon that he allows shelter within his ranks.
