Most of the dragons who graced Asclepius’s path did so only with a shudder. The bone chimes attached to his blood red wings gave many a sense of dread. When one took sick in Skyloft, they had to see Asclepius. When one wanted a tonic to heal an immovable hatchling, they had to see Asclepius. When a dragon wanted to bring back the dead, they saw Asclepius. All did so with one eye on the coatl as they downed the mixtures he gave them.

Asclepius was not a dragon of morals, that much was abundantly clear. Any pustules he could pop or gashes he could cauterize, he did so eagerly and often without providing a method of anethesia. Screams from the apothecary’s tent could often be heard all across Skyloft. But the procedures and medicines he gave . . . they made the dragons look and feel almost like shiny, new versions of themselves.

Some say it’s some form of dark magic. And maybe it is, since Asclepius came from a dark part of the Scarred Wasteland. Maybe he’s just a really good apothecary, because you kind of have to be if you’re a plague dragon. The sick don’t last long there, after all. Whatever the reason, dragons are wary of Asclepius, whose tent popped up in the middle of a chilly night and never left.

____Asclepius’s apothecary shop was a front for something much darker. More dragons came to see about morally grey services than just plain old healing, though he also provided that by unorthodox means. On his off-hours, dragons of sketchier backgrounds came to him and asked if he could help them out just a little. Some wanted something as simple as a love tonic. Others, a tonic to kill. Others still, to bring back the dead.

The dragons who wanted their loved ones back certainly got what they paid for. The corpses of the dragons became reanimated for a short period of time. But the corpses--they were no more alive than zombies. They were missing a very key component of life. They trudged around, begging for the taste of dragon flesh. They always fell upon the unfortunate customer, feasting on them until both dragons moved no more. Asclepius always charged more for this service.

____Of the many dragons Asclepius has offered his services to, one customer stood out above the rest. This was Grinder, who wanted to bring life back to the rotten eggs she had laid. Asclepius had hummed his uncertainty at this particular request, mainly because he had never performed the ritual on something that was not a fully formed, breathing, previously existing creature before. But he would never know the outcome if he didn’t try.

He took the rotten eggs from Grinder and placed them in the ritual circle. He danced his dance and sprinkled the herbs over the eggs. Grinder waited impatiently outside, casting imperial-shaped shadows on his tent. He thought she shouldn’t see it in case it went awry, and he was glad he made her wait outside. Only one of the eggs moved, just an inch, and then stilled. They both dissolved into gray mush. Asclepius knew it wouldn’t work, so why was he so disappointed at the outcome?
