ARES dangerous force | war | desperation I was told I was named after the legends of another land, a god of war and bloodlust. Why my family thought this would be an appropriate name for a hatchling, I do not know. Perhaps they hoped I would grow to achieve the greatness of legends. Regardless, their love for me was clear. I was their pride and joy, their reason to wake up each morning to face the sun. They had such grand plans for my life; they wanted to watch me grow, find a calling, fall in love. No one suspected that anything could pop the happy bubble we were in. Alas, many things in the world have thorns. In the darkness of night, when clouds obscured the moon, something sinister entered the nest. I was half-asleep, my parents resting beside me. A dark shape that twisted and sizzled wrapped itself around my parents, shadowy claws reaching for me. I tried to move, but it was useless – it was as though I was encased in a pool of black slime. The claws reached into my mind and tore into the very essence of my being, leaving a hollow shell that would never truly recover. |
My family was no longer loving and supportive. It was as though the worst aspects of their personalities had been pulled to the surface, while their previous characteristics were drowned underneath a shroud of corruption. They were vicious, cruel, obsessed with their own gains. I myself was not the same. I became paranoid, always feeling that something was watching me just out of sight. I was more judgmental, prejudiced against anyone that rubbed me the wrong way. Above all, I was numb. I felt no love, no joy, no concern. At times I would black out, my memories fuzzy and my body weak and exhausted.
My blackouts became more frequent. The corruption was spreading. I knew something terrible was coming, but I could never have guessed the true horror of what lay before me. After a particularly long blackout, I awoke in a panic. I could not remember. Why couldn't I remember?! Most of my memories were mere shadows, consumed by the curse of corruption. The ground around me was stained in blood, the bodies of countless dragons scattered across the landscape. A monstrous shape rose up before me, a horrendous beast composed of the remains of fallen imperials. Thus far it had three heads, but I could see more of the fallen imperials being drawn into its form. Is this what we truly are? I turned to flee, the monster rising behind me and roaring into the skies. There was no time to do anything but fly. I had no choice. Whatever my life had been before, I left it behind on that battlefield. |

For a few years, I traveled alone. The blackouts stopped, but the majority of my memories did not return. One thing I did remember was the unknown corruption, the thing that had slithered into my life and consumed it for itself. I wanted it gone...no, I needed it gone. I must have salvation. My sins must be erased. Alas, I knew not how to turn back the tide of time. So I did the only thing I could do. I traveled over mountains, through forests, around sparkling lakes and rivers. At long last I reached the Tangled Wood, its darkness providing a welcome place to hide from the world. It was there I encountered Shadowreaper, a guardian with scales of the purest midnight. I watched her for some time, and I grew impressed with her skill in combat. All was not well, however. After some time she stopped eating, and there seemed to be no hope in the way she carried herself. A pack of rogues, hungry for fresh meat, took this chance to attack her. Well, I could not allow that. I tore into them with the fury of an emperor, their blood staining the ground beneath my feet. Those that escaped would know better than to cross me again. Shadowreaper would no longer have to live alone. Together we would begin a clan of our own, a clan where perhaps I could finally defeat the corruption within me. There are others here who seek acceptance as well. One of the most fascinating members of the clan is Hysminai, a female imperial with a split personality. She can go from kind and selfless to a savage beast in a mere instant. I will not reject her, for I know all too well the burdens of having something you cannot control within you. Something about her seems familiar, as though I have met her before; however, I have no memories of her prior to her acceptance into the clan. Sometimes I wonder if she was corrupted as well – but there is little I can do to help her when I myself remain in the grip of a mysterious darkness. I will defeat it. I must defeat it. If I do not, we are all doomed. |

Fourteen times The bell Has tolled And fourteen more Will come One knell For every life Snuffed out By my Blackened Hands Acrid smoke Still cloys To charred wicks A thin reminder Of light That once shone brightly What have I done? Take these treacherous hands Bind them - quick! I can no longer trust Their work Gone Are the trappings Of innocence And my soul Will not shine Again poem by ixris |
