Biography
Member of the Copper Order
|
Among the Clan’s members, one does not seem to be quite like the others: a Pearlcatcher whose pearl gives off a haunting, mystifying glow, whose step is careful, methodical, who refuses to let anyone touch him, save for the assortment of furs that adorn him. His gaze is an empty one; his eyes lack life, and so does he.
Perhaps it would be wise, in this case, to start at the beginning. See this: a young Tundra running through the grassy fields, a Pearlcatcher - weighed down by his namesake, currently about a third of his own size - doing whatever he can to catch up. It is a dreamlike picture, yes, and so is their promise: to stay together for as long as they can. Several years later, the Tundra’s love for adventure has only been amplified; her partner, the frail Pearlcatcher, reluctantly follows in her footsteps. But their friendship lasts eternally, as they promised, and they vow to never let anything get in the way of that. Of course, such vows merely invite disaster. One day, the Pearlcatcher awoke to find that the Tundra had gone. She’d been out on a solo trip, or so he heard - but she never returned home. She was likely still alive, but without knowing where, there was no chance she’d be found again. She was gone. For the Pearlcatcher, those words stung like venom. And venom it was, slowly eating away at the boy, day and night. Then, when there was hardly anything left, he made his third and final promise to her: to find her, no matter what it took, so they could be together once more. Another year passed. It was now the day on which he was closest to his goal, closer than he’d ever been; a small, well-hidden area at the Sunbeam Ruins where, it seemed, the Tundra had been. The trail of clues led him to a small hill, with a smaller entryway carved out. It was like bait for her. If she wasn’t here right now, surely she’d been at some point. The Pearlcatcher was never quite as brave as the Tundra, but for now, he had no choice. And so he entered the cave - as it turned out, home to a small temple of sorts, perhaps a tomb - on his final mission. “Glim, is that really you?” was the next thing he could remember - a familiar voice in an otherwise unfamiliar world. His body felt heavy, his mind even more so - and what about his memories? It was a haze, a blur. It seemed that everything in these next moments went faster, slower, then faster again: was his arm always this color? When she held it, why did he barely feel anything? What was that clinking sound? Why did his pearl glow? Through a sudden, painful haze, it was Tallic who carried him out of the cave and to her new clan - but there was little that could be done about his strange condition. Rather than letting him die, Tallic begged them; there had to be something to help him, after all. Glim’s new body is a strange one. His spirit encased in pearl, while a cold metal makes up the rest - it is not something he has gotten used to yet, but he tries, as well as he can. Even so, questions linger in his mind: would it have been better if he had died there, will he ever get accustomed to not being a creature of flesh and blood, what is he to do now? Maybe he’ll just stay. |
