Malygas is both a gentle and fierce dragon, proud in his strength but also wise enough to know when kindness will be more effective than might. While he was once very open and generous, the events leading to his downfall have made him quiet, bitter and reclusive. It's not easy to go from a clan Patriarch to a prisoner, especially not after seeing those you once led exalted to a deity you never cared for. Worse still, when some of those were your own children. While the old wildclaw is not a literal prisoner behind bars, he is forbidden to leave the lair and seen more of a trophy than a member of the clan, a reminder to those who would challenge the Matriarch that there are punishments worse than death. His name is never spoken, and those around him ignore him for his heresy, for he cares little for the deities that so clearly created dragonkind. Even if that deity is not the Flamecaller, honor and respect to one's creator are the foundation of the clan. He is truly an outcast. While nothing stops him from ending the loneliness and suffering imposed on him, as he is never under guard and free to move about the lair as he pleases, Malygas endures. He is the only one left of his clan, and it's name is known only to him. He feels it is his duty to finish this life naturally as punishment for not defending his clanmates against Teiwaz's fanatical ideals. For letting his mate and children be handed over to the Flamecaller to endure a life of servitude to a deity they never cared for. For letting something so avoidable happen so easily. That will be his legacy. |
Once, long ago, a small but proud clan lived between the edges of the Shifting Expanse and the Ashfall Wastes. Close enough to be influenced by the magic and power of the Stormcatcher, but near enough to the lands of the Flamecaller to harvest and exploit the bounties of Her lands, they offered allegiance to neither and instead, worked for themselves and their own betterment. The Patriarch of this clan was Malygas, a fair and clever leader who genuinely cared for those under his guidance. The old Wildclaw doesn't like to say he makes mistakes often, but the day he found an abandoned egg in Fire territory was definitely one of them. Taking pity on the helpless dragon within, he took it from the Molten Scar to his clan's lair where many months later, a female skydancer violently tore herself free of the confines of her egg. Malygas took her into his care, naming her Teiwaz.
From the moment she hatched, the skydancer took an interest in violence and battle, and looked ever westward to the Ashfall Wastes. She asked why they didn't worship the Flamecaller, Stormcatcher, or any other of the Eleven, but the answers never satisfied her. Instead, she settled for a shrine to the deity of Fire for her own use. Even then, Malygas thought little of it, asumiung her passion was driven by her element, but Teiwaz spoke often of taking his place as the clan leader ... not earning, not inheriting ... taking. He stood by and did nothing, hoping perhaps the fierce skydancer would cool as she aged.
Decades later, and seemingly out of no where, the skydancer he counted as one of his own blood finally challenged him to the leadership of the clan. He was heartbroken, but unable to refuse, as both his nature as a wildclaw and knowing Teiwaz well enough to predict what she would do to the clan prevented him from backing down. The battle was swift and brutal. Malygas fell without even landing a blow, and Teiwaz stood over his battered husk, shrieking in victory.
The clan's change was swift. Their new Matriarch ordered them to pick up everything they could carry and march to heart of the Ashfall Waste to beseech the Flamecaller for a place in Her lands. Those who did not fall in line, fell where they stood, and Malygas watched as two lives were taken to prove that their new leader was serious about their relocation.
Upon arriving at The Great Furnace, the great flaming goddess emerged from the smoke and ash, glaring down at their pitiful number with burning eyes and bared teeth. Teiwaz bowed and spoke, proclaiming her devotion to the Deity of Fire and offering all members of her clan as exalts, to be used as She saw fit. The only exception was Malygas, whom she asked to be spared and used as a living example to those who would defy the will of the Flamecaller.
The Deity of Fire agreed, and Teiwaz was given a lair all her own on the slopes of the Great Furnace, with only the former Patriarch and a few devout Fire dragons left to rebuild. She named her new clan the Forge Wardens, and set out to call other like-minded dragons to her cause.
