"ATHENE (or Athena) was the great Olympian goddess of wise counsel, war, the defense of towns, heroic endeavour, weaving, pottery and other crafts. She was depicted crowned with a crested helm, armed with shield and spear, and wearing the snake-trimmed aigis cloak wrapped around her breast and arm, adorned with the monstrous head of the Gorgon."

Athena was born from the head of Zeus, and represents all the knowledge of the world. She is the matron goddess of Athens, whose people's favor she won after beating Poseidon in a contest in which she had created the olive tree and he had created the horse. Since the people preferred her olive tree due to its usefulness as a food, an oil, and a source of wood, she became the god they modeled their city after. As such, Athena is associated with olives and the olive tree, as well as owls, helmets, spears, and the head of the Gorgon. Athena is a proud goddess who loved contests, as is evident by her role in the Judgement of Paris, as well as the story of her weaving contest with Arachne, whom Athena turned into a spider after she lost to the goddess. When she felt that one of her shrine maids had defiled her temple, she turned her into a monstrous Gorgon (Medusa), who was later slain by the demigod Perseus.
