impassive | venom| deprivation

I was born in the heart of plague territory, and I lived there for much of my life. As scarce as the land was, it had its fair share of plant and animal life; I developed a fascination with them. They brought me the only joy I could find in this desolate land. My world brightened considerably with the birth of my two daughters. No matter the hardships I had to endure, I could always count on them to lighten my mood. Alas, there was not enough food for the entirety of my clan. What little we had went to the leaders, and the rest of us lived off whatever scraps we could find. The weak and sick quickly died, unable to withstand the sharp pangs of hunger. Most of the hatchlings didn't live past their first day, and some dragons resorted to eating their own eggs. I gave up my own health for that of my daughters, allowing them to eat most of the scraps I found.

On a day when food was particularly scarce, I lost track of one of my daughters. I heard her voice crying in the wind, and I flew as fast as I could in her direction. She was pinned down by the jagged claws of one of the clan superiors, a bad-tempered imperial who had a reputation of taking scraps from the weak and elderly. “What are you doing?!” I could barely contain the rage in my voice. “Oh, hello, Anaideia my dear! You know, I've been thinking lately. You have two beautiful daughters, and food is so scarce, you know. Surely you won't mind...sharing?” In that instant I knew my daughter's life was hanging by a thread. I had no time to think. With a roar of fear and anger I launched myself at him, striking at his corrupt scales with tooth and claw. He cried out to the heavens in pain, realizing that only the leader's intervention could save him now.
“What on earth is going on here?” The leader had arrived, drawn by the commotion. I opened my mouth to speak, but the imperial quickly jumped in to accuse me. “She attacked me! She said only her daughters mattered, and that I would be a worthwhile sacrifice. She's a monster!” I tried to defend myself, but the leader would hear none of it. Why would he believe my word against that of a superior?

“You and your children must leave, now. If you are found in this territory by nightfall, our warriors will have permission to destroy you.” I had no choice but to flee with my children. As I left I could feel the gaze of the corrupt imperial burning into my back. His dark red eyes gleamed with twisted glee and a toothy grin spread across his face. His expression haunts my nightmares to this day.

We wandered the wilderness for days. Food was practically nonexistent. I gave everything to my children, for their lives were more important than mine. Alas, I should have been more cautious. In my desperation to keep them alive, I fed them poisoned meat that was ridden with some kind of new strain of disease. It had no scent and looked normal, so I had no clue until it was too late. They died quickly, leaving this world less than an hour after their symptoms began. In my despair I destroyed the land around me and collapsed on the ground, suddenly devoid of all energy. I had no purpose to living, and I couldn't even bring myself to bury them. I wanted to die. I longed to join my children in the afterlife. I was certain nothing could give me a reason to live on. As I lost consciousness, I heard a familiar voice. It was the superior who was responsible for this entire mess. “Oh, you pitiful thing. Couldn't even protect your daughters, hmm? Worthless.”

I now had a reason for living: revenge. I would make him pay, make him feel the pain he inflicted on my family. I knew I was too weak to face him head-on, so I waited. I experimented with the plants of the land, creating strange potions and poisons. I tried them on myself, knowing I must perfect them before I took my revenge. It altered my body and mind, giving me numerous diseases and draining my sanity. It would be worth it, it would all be worth it. I had plans, for I had been watching my former clan. The superior had children of his own now. How he acquired a mate I do not know, but that didn't matter. I would inflict on him the same pain I endured. His children would pay the price of his corruption.

On a day when the others were out on a hunt, I approached his lair. His children were far too trusting; they scarfed down the poisoned food I offered like it was the sweetest thing they ever tasted. I felt no remorse, for my conscience had long since been extinguished. By the the he returned, they were long since dead. In his dismay he never saw my ambush coming, never noticed the poisoned smoke filling his nostrils. I finished him off that night, and my revenge was complete. My time in plague territory was now finished, and I left to take refuge in the shadows.

The Tangled Wood was a fascinating place, full of its own unique herbs and wildlife. It seems others were interested in it as well, for I encountered a crimson imperial dissecting prey deep in the Foxfire Bramble. It seems she thought she could keep them alive. How foolish. Still, she had a remarkable talent, one I could mold. She also seemed eager for acceptance. After learning her name - Styx - I allowed her to accompany me, for she reminded me of the relationship I could have had with my own children. Together we continued to experiment on living prey. We discovered healing potions, deadly poisons, and strange concoctions that caused mutations or altered behavior. Later we joined a clan of darkness together, knowing that survival would be easier with strong alliances. I cannot allow myself to become too attached to her, for I have learned the cost of losing that which you love. I will not go through that again. Still, she is a welcome presence in this forest of darkness.

Cast aside
These
Tethers
That bind my heart

I do not want them

These chains of iron
And ribbons of silk

These coils of laughter
And bands of rage

I do not need them

My heart
Has become
As the dry riverbed

Once
It was a source
Of hope
And life

But now
It is nothing
But tumbled
Stones

poem by ixris

Every night, I wake
From a hell I cannot flee
Every day, heavy
Under a hot eye of mind
I’m numb but boiling
Awaiting the apogee
I’m frozen until
This stifling fury resigns

Their birth brought me joy
In a wasteland of umber
They were hope and light
Kindling motherhood vows
To be snuffed when their
Eyes shut in lasting slumber
Watching the red threads
Unraveling from their mouths

Their poison is mine
I shall return the favor
A mother has died
But a vengeance has been born
A debt to be paid
But ‘fore then, I’m the graver
The fallen mother
Sitting anxious, left to mourn

Tearing walls, turning
That empty nest to rubble
The heaving demons
Lying restless in the dust
My world is rounded
As though trapped in a bubble
A twisting mind seized
By smothering disgust

One final reprieve
This taking for which I yearn
That my daughters are
Remembered but not returned
