Lord of the Dead
Lord of the Dead

"HADES, the god of death and the dead. He presided over funeral rites and defended the right of the dead to due burial. Hades was also the god of the hidden wealth of the earth, from the fertile soil with nourished the seed-grain, to the mined wealth of gold, silver and other metals." When Hades and his two brothers, Zeus and Poseidon, divided the land, Hades was left with the dismal, dreary underworld, where souls travel after they die. His three-headed dog, Cerberus, guards the entrance to the underworld, while he relies on the aid of other underworld gods like Thanatos, Charon, the Judges, and countless daemons, to deliver, sort, and guard or punish the souls that rest there. After some time, Hades got lonely and wanted to marry, and he decided that he had fallen in love with the goddess of spring, Persephone, who was the daughter of Demeter, the goddess of the harvest. (See Persephone's page for the long version of the story). In short, after a kidnapping, eternal winter, and deal based on a brief taste of a few pomegranate seeds, Persephone married Hades, and was made his Queen of the Underworld. She spends half the year with him in the Underworld, and half the year with her mother, Demeter. Hades famously possessed a staff with which to guide shades to the Underworld, as well as his Helm of Darkness, which held the power to make its wearer invisible. |
