"Once you learn to read, you will be forever free."

To be seen, not heard.

If there was one thing Pyrite had learned in her life, it was this.

Born to be little more than a pretty doll for aristocrats and visiting leaders to envy and admire, Pyrite was raised from birth not to speak, not to read, not to think, not to learn, not to live. She learned those lessons well and early. While her owners did naught to damage her glistening scales and ethereal appearance, there were many other ways to inflict pain upon a young imperial who didn't know her place.

That's why, years later, when the newly adult dragon witnessed her masters being slain by a visiting clan leader, she did nothing. She was no more than a window, pretty to look at, but ultimately just a crude reflection of the world beyond. She was raised to know this by the very people being slaughtered before her eyes, and so, she watched.

Pyrite knew they deserved this. Despite her masters' contrary beliefs , she was incredibly observant and intelligent, and therefore knew exactly what kind of people she belonged to. It was only a surprise in that none of the business partners they'd screwed over in the past hadn't done this before.

"Oh well, " Pyrite thought, "walls won't protect you forever, and windows will always shatter."

As Nicole dealt the finishing blow to some sorry excuse for a king in front of her, she turned around, feeling eyes on her back. She was surprised to see a stunning imperial there calmly watching and evaluating her in a way that Nicole knew well, as she knew many with much the same powerful stare. As Nicole stared back, she looked around and noticed the gaudily clad pearlcatchers, and coatls scattering the throne room with dawning realization.

Ah, I see.

With disappointment and sadness, Nicole left to find the mind healer or someone better suited to help these traumatized concubines start a new life.

Looking back at the imperial now, she paused. While the other concubines she saw had little life left in their blank stares, the imperial who stared her down now had the curiosity and hunger of a thousand years hidden just beneath the surface of her eyes.

Trapped in a staring match with the unflappable fae, Pyrite was torn on what to do.

This was her chance. This was her chance to learn, her chance to speak.

"I want to know."

The normally collected fae felt her eyes widen. She had had experience with concubines and slaves of the courts before, and knew the unspeakable things done to them as a means to shatter their minds and sense of self.

And yet this quiet imperial sat before her and spoke, not only spoke, but spoke as an individual.

"What is it you wish to know, my child?" Nicole chose her words carefully, trying to gently see the scope of the young imperial's shell.

Head tilting, Pyrite looked a the fae and answered unthinkingly

"Everything"

The silhouette of a coatl she knew well flashed before her in her mind's eye, and slowly, Nicole smiled.

"I think I can help you with that."
