Only A Little Off

____Toeing the boundary where mainland ends and a dubious walk down an unlit dock begins, you reconsider more than once the risks vs rewards for your little endeavor before hesitantly taking that first step forward. Boards creak ominously beneath your talons as the dock accepts your weight, the structure surprisingly sturdy despite its protests. The jarring scrape of the planks that wail into the darkness are a stark contrast to the whisper soft lapping of the waves beneath that causes the dock to gently sway; not enough to unsteady your steps, but in a barely-there way that feels as if the night itself is breathing around you... it is both lulling and eerie.

____As you approach the ship that is moored at the end of the dock, you take in the sight of it because it is a sight: The light of the full moon reveals the sun-bleached teal paint that stains the bulk of the hull, though you're pretty sure even in the pitch of a moonless night you'd still be able to make out such a loud color. Certainly the bright magenta runes lining the edges of the railing that seem to almost glow against the deep purple of the rail boards wouldn't be missed even if every star in the sky was to blink out of existence, and are those... yes, you wonder to yourself humorously, those are most assuredly the brightest pink sails you have ever seen.

____What with the eccentric to say the least aesthetic of the ship and the murmur of what sounds to be a lively gathering in its belly steadily growing louder as you draw nearer, warm light spilling from open portholes seemingly beckoning you closer, you find it increasingly difficult to remember why you were so nervous approaching the ship.

____That is until a door above deck opens unexpectedly, the raucous din of the sailors below shattering the night briefly before the door closes again. It is a pregnant moment before your straining ears catch the aerie, delicate chiming of bells, propelled slowly towards the railing closest to where you stand with heavy, purposeful steps. Glass floats hanging from seemingly any available place that had gone unseen before begin to softly glow an eerie teal, brightening bit by bit with each step that comes closer, and you can't help but to swallow nervously.

____Boots unseen scuff to a stop, and for a breath there is silence.

____Claws are the first thing to appear over the edge of the rail, the wispwillow glow of the baubles glinting off metallic sickles as they reach out and grasp the edge, a staccato *tap tap tap* echoing in the space between as they rap their talons against the polished wood. So focused on those impossibly sharp things that for a moment you miss the serpentine neck that emerges from the shadows, and it isn't until the dragon smiles that you take notice, only to realize the talons don't hold a candle to the slivers behind those grinning lips.

____The only thing that keeps you from backpedaling down the dock and back onto the assumed safety of dry land is the fact that there is nothing overtly aggressive in the way they consider you, only amused curiosity... though their eyes glint with more than a slight hint of 'unhingedness'. The titter that comes from them doesn't do much to dispel that observation, her voice is far more jovial and kind than you were expecting.

____"Ayeee and what do we have here?! What have ye come searching for tonight... what can Madame Verbosé do for you?"
