"HEPHAESTUS was the great Olympian god of fire, metalworking, stonemasonry and the art of sculpture. He was usually depicted as a bearded man holding hammer and tongs--the tools of a smith--and riding a donkey."

Hephaestus was the son of Hera and Zeus (by some accounts, Hera alone gave birth to him or he sprang from her thigh), who Hera threw off of the Gods' home of Mount Olympus after she noticed that Hephaestus had been born with physically disabled in his feet which rendered him unable to walk. After he fell down the mountainside, he landed in the ocean, where he was found by the sea-goddess Thetis. She cared for him, and under her care he also met the Cyclopes, who taught him the power of fire and how to forge metal. Hephaestus became skilled at his craft, and when he returned to Olympus, he had built a golden throne for his disowning mother, Hera.

She happily sat upon it, but to her horror it soon ensnared her and trapped her there. No gods could free her, and when they begged Hephaestus to release her, he refused, saying "I have no mother". In the end, Hera is freed, although there are several versions of how that came to be. In one account, Dionysus, being the god of wine and all, gets Hephaestus drunk before returning him to the site, where he then agrees to free Hera. In another version of this, Hephaestus is still intoxicated, but it takes Poseidon suggesting that Hephaestus marry Athena in return for Hera's release to convince him (his relations with Athena end horribly however so this does not last). Finally, in another version, he demands Aphrodite's hand in marriage instead, which he is granted for Hera's release, but of course their marriage ends up turning sour due to Aphrodite's numerous affairs.

However, in the end, it all ends up in Hera being freed (although her relationship with her son is still damaged beyond repair) and Hephaestus marrying Aphrodite one way or another, be it by Zeus's later decree or his own demand. In some accounts, he eventually divorces her after her relationship with Ares is revealed, and eventually Hephaestus remarries to Aglaia, the Goddess of Glory. In any case, Hephaestus was the blacksmith of Olympus for all time, and personally crafted all the gods' weapons and armor himself.
