Biography

Valea
Combat Magic Instructor
Chaotic Good

PkKAmaj.png
While Kokoro trains the clan's fighters, Valea trains the magically inclined dragons in the ways of combative magic. Only a few of her students are actually part of the clan guard - most just take lessons for personal self defence.

As high-potential magic users are notoriously independent and overconfident, Valea has developed a strict teaching style. While she isn't cruel by nature, Valea feels the strictness is completely necessary to prevent students from injuring one another. However, when students are cooperative, the fae's love for her craft shines through.

Somehow though, she actually gets along with Atuin, who may as well be the definition of uncooperativeness. As it turns out, Valea's willing to overlook the spiral's many faults in order to have a companion with such an intense love for knowledge and magic. She might not even notice some of his faults, for secretly, she's jealous of his lack of inhibitions. Things would be so much easier (and more fun!) if she could just blast her way through life, without a care for anyone else. But unlike Atuin, Valea has morals, so that won't be happening anytime soon.

Of course, there are some difficulties for a wind dragon teaching mostly arcane students. It's not impossible though, as many of the fundamentals between elements are similar, even if the effects are remarkably different. No major accidents have occurred yet, although the time Valea's basic breeze spell turned out to allow arcane dragons to disable gravity was quite the experience.

In her spare time, she is working on writing a beginner's guide to magic. Unfortunately, the cost of the fireproof paper is making it seemingly infeasible to create many copies. The one copy she did complete is in Invernale's library, but has a habit of trying to collapse into a small black hole if ignored for an extended time. It was unintended, but Valea's been trying to play it off as an innovative storage solution.

For the most part, her friends are other mages. She just doesn't understand how to interact with those who don't get magic. The fact that not everyone can just summon a tornado at will is incomprehensible to her. Valea tries to get along with those who don't practice magic, but as she's nearly forgotten that wings are for flying (levitation is just so much easier), it never goes well.

To keep up that wind mage look, she keeps some light gusts that blow around leaves and grass at all times. While it does lower the strain on her wing muscles, it draws the ire of any dragon with minor allergies. Luckily for her, the windblown look can be easily transformed into a gale-force escape.

Valea was never supposed to be a mage. Sheltered in the Cloudsong, and hatched to a wealthy merchant family, she had an easy life ahead of her.

But she wasn't satisfied with just leeching off her parents' fortune. Determined to earn her own legacy, she demanded to be allowed to lead one of her family's trade missions. Somehow even more proud of her than they had been before, her parents gladly permitted it.

With their blessing, she and her company travelled towards the Ashfall Waste. The first week or so passed without incident. By then they had crossed the border, and made quite a few clawfuls of treasure in profit. Everyone was in great spirits.

As they travelled further into the waste, embers began to float through the air. Some embers were normal for the area, but within a few days they began to obscure vision and restrict breath. Instead of dirt, they travelled across a fine layer of ash, as it was deemed unsafe to fly. Realizing these conditions weren't going to cease, the company increased their pace. Hoping to reach shelter soon, they used their limited magic to try to clear the air. But within hours it became clear that they were too slow.

Through the dull orange haze they could see doom in the horizon. Towering in the distance, a funnel of swirling flames was approaching, a fiery tornado that reduced everything in its path to ash.

Terrified, Valea's fellow merchants... well, they didn't do anything. They just huddled together, hopelessness clear in their eyes. Surrounded by a sea of ash, there were only two choices - suffocate or burn.

But then, two points of green light broke through the haze. Acting on instinct and determination, she raised her claws towards the sky, the flames reflecting in her wide open eyes. Her cloak fluttered as winds whipped around her, and her fellow dragons found themselves no longer choking on ash.

The winds and the heat both became more fierce , until there was naught but a sea of fire, with a solitary bubble of air clinging the the ground within. Surrounded by a protective shell of winds, the company was still huddling together, most of them convinced that the Windsinger himself had shown up to take them to the afterlife.

But after what felt like an eternity, the heat began to abate. The winds started to die down, and the glow in Valea's eyes began to fade. As the fae's grip on consciousness slipped, she realized one truth.

That was freaking awesome.

The power. The energy. For the rest of the mission, she could focus on nothing else. The company suffered for it, as the dragons of the Blacksand Annex were less willing to trade while assaulted by miniature tornadoes. But her fellow merchants were just happy to be alive, and had no intention of stopping her.

When the company finally returned home, Valea immediately went right back to packing her bags. She knew what she wanted, and it wasn't going to be found in the safety of the Cloudsong. Her parents were slightly disappointed that she wouldn't be carrying on the family business, but wandering is the way of wind dragons, and so they also couldn't be more proud.

Thus Valea set off, in search of both adventure and fellow mages, so that she could both test and refine her power. The most obvious destination for that was the Starfall Isles, but she thought she'd travel around a bit first. After all, when in doubt, you should just see where the winds take you.
