Biography
i s l a
the ice born; a retired leader living in the shadows
|
Isla was born into the howling winds and blistering ice-storms of the Southern Icefield and from a young age was raised to lead. Her parents were co-founders of their own Clan, a small kingdom spread throughout the Ice Flight. When the Boji and Bugg were gathered by the Icewarden to join his ice-bound collection deep in the Fortress of Ends, Isla stepped forward to take their place as leader. Despising change, she preferred to rule her Clan with strict rules and stricter punishments - change meant loss and danger. She was a strong and dependent leader, protecting her kin with the ferocity necessary to survive in the harshest of winters. Although she was a fair, stern dragoness, she was quick to anger and would often snap at any hatchling or dragon-in-training who acted without thought. "There is no room for error in the wilderness," she growled, repeating herself often. She would shake out her own scarred and torn wings, too damaged to fly with. They were displayed as a lesson for the hatchlings - only the strongest would survive here, and even then, there was no guarantee. As time went on, the kingdom strengthened and grew. Many dragons came and went, passing through so quickly as if they were ghosts in a storm. Isla can picture all of their faces, but doesn't remember many names; they were the weak ones, those unable to survive in the storm. There is one, however, that stands out before the others: An innocent Natureling by the name of Wilhelm, standing tall before the leader's scrutiny. "You will not survive here," she warned him in a low voice. "You are too soft. Go back to the warmth and shelter of the Labyrinth before you are killed by your own stupidity." Isla remembers this moment clearly, and can still picture when he did not back down from her snarls. Rather, he transformed and adapted, and as a newly-formed Wildclaw, he could stand his ground against her. Impressed, Isla conceded to the dragon's presence. "Perhaps I was wrong," she said with a dangerous smile, showing sharp fangs. "You are welcome here, young one. Do not make me regret my decision." |
Wilhelm remained and Isla, far from regretting the decision, began to feel grateful for the Wildclaw's presence. The two became mates and over time, Wilhelm began to help with the responsibilities of being Clan leader. They lived together happily for a short while, before things took a turn for the worse. Isla began to fall ill, and the Clan healers were unable to help her. For her own health and safety, Isla was forced to leave the Southern Icefields - leaving Wilhelm behind to lead the kingdom. For the first time in her life, Isla's heart melted at the moment of farewell. In the past, she had watched dragons leave her Clan with a heart of ice, never shedding a tear. But this good-bye was different, although Isla stubbornly told herself it was only because she was header to warmer climates. She made her way across Sorneith on foot, looking for any Clan willing to take in an old leader. It wasn't until she reached the Clan of Umbra Thorn in the Murkbarrow Close that she seemed to find what she was looking for. She settled in the Tangled Wood, fully embracing her new role of grumbling elder. Nowadays, to distract herself, she scours through the woods for bones to add to her growing collection. Despite her life-long fascination for skeletons, she never had a successful hoard in the Southern Icefield because finding starch-white bones in a snowfield was nigh impossible. Here in the Shadow Flight, however, there were endless piles of skeletons for Isla to find. There may be an upside to change after all. |
