Biography

I am the Soul of this Grove, I feel for us and know what is needed; I feel the pain of this Grove, and I feel its pleasures; but like all Souls, I am beholden to the Mind.

I recall little of my origins, and nothing of life as a hatchling. I vaguely recall being both a wolf, and a great serpent. I did not inhabit these forms alternately, but simultaneously: controlling both bodies with one mind, yet able to have each move independently. Though these forms were independent, they were rarely separate, patrolling the world as a pair. Sometimes I was one being, which was both serpent and wolf combined into one form.

Yes, patrolling. I remember patrolling wild forests in these forms and taming the flora. I would tend to trees whose trunk was worn down by horns, prop up saplings too weak to hold themselves in the light, and carry a mawful of water for a parched shrub. I lived infinitely in this manner, consuming the beasts who damaged my forest and sometimes resting for weeks at a time against a bean or a vine, until the plants could support themselves.

My first clear memory as a dragon is also of plants. I awoke in the tangles of a berry bush, with creeping-jack grown over my sides. I struggled to stand, and could not disentangle myself without destroying both bush and ivy. The wolf-serpent in my memories bade me stay, wait out the natural death of these plants and then stand. I had lived forever, as old as life itself, and could easily wait the few decades of a berry bush's lifetime. Yet I grew uncomfortable, and hungry, and restless. This new draconic form felt all the inconveniences of animal life, and they grew harder to ignore. First, I ate the berries from the bush, and found them tarter than anything I recalled from my life on patrol. They barely sated my hunger.

When something small and furry dashed past, I instinctively struck before I'd had time to consider my actions. I chomped down and savoured my meal, discovering that the fauna of this world tasted salty and bitter compared to what I had grown accustomed. My strike had broken the bush apart and torn the creeping-jack from my scales. The damage was done, and so I stood, shook myself, and discovered my wings.

That bush was my egg, and Nature hatched me full-grown into this new world. I sought purpose, and found the Glademother. I sought companionship, and found a strangler who reminded me of my own serpentine form. Compelled to name him Dali, I bade him follow, and he grows tolerant of my company. We tended to the plants, just as I had done forever.

We considered ourselves content until our first encounter with another dragon. She was half my size, slender and untrusting. She slunk into the grove I was compelled to protect, and collapsed atop the very plants I had just tended. Incensed, I dragged her from them by her crest, but she did not resist. She declared herself too weary to fight, curled up where I had dropped her, and slept.

When she awoke, hours later, she offered no apology but told me her name: Bedwen. Hatched alone in an abandoned nest, she fended for herself until she found us. I bade her care for the Grove and not lie upon its growth, and she could stay. She knew nothing of plants, and so we educated her, showing her how to care for what, when to leave well enough alone and when to interfere.
This is our Grove, and we will protect it.
