As a child, Peregrine was often teased by her siblings. During play time, they’d often lead her astray before ditching her in a forest, letting her wander around lost. When she’d finally stumble home in the dark, shaking from fear, she’d find her siblings laughing at her. Their jokes continued for a long while and Peregrine found herself spending more and more time alone. She wasn’t interested in being the object of her brothers’ amusement. While they were off play fighting, she settled into a small corner of the cavern to casually look through the treasures her family kept. It was while she was rummaging through this pile that she found an old, worn map. Tracing a line with her claw, Peregrine pondered the similarity between the line’s shape and the shape of a river nearby. Were they the same? For hours afterward, Peregrine scoured over the map, noting landmarks that were similar and others that seemed unfamiliar. It was just as she was becoming confident navigating the map that her mother came in. Seeing her with the map, her mother smiled and began helping her learn the meaning behind the different symbols and etchings. Peregrine blushed as she realized that what she thought was a river was in fact a mountainside, but with her mother’s encouragement, she was soon reading maps skillfully. She was delighted to learn that the map she had found was only a very small map of the area and that the world was much, much larger. Pulling out different maps, she spent hours every day simply memorizing them to ensure she’d never get lost again. By the time she could hold a quill, she began drawing her own maps. They began as little more than crude drawings, but as she continued, they began to take on a quality that far passed those she’d originally studied. Her brothers often came to her for help mapping out new areas, and soon she began venturing out on her own with paper and quill, sketching the landscape surrounding her home. Eventually, after there was nothing left uncharted nearby, Peregrine packed up her meager belongings and bid her family good-bye. There was more to this world than the small Windswept Plateau, and Peregrine wanted to be the one to map it. | xxxxxxxxxxxx |
