Ymir (ユミル) is a graduate of the 104th Cadet Corps and a former member of the Scout Regiment. Once an abandoned and nameless kid of Marley, she was taken in by an Eldian cult and treated as a False Queen and Goddess, bearing the name Ymir Fritz, the Titan God of the Eldians. It is here that she begins to develop a false personality for the cult, presenting herself as a good person for others. After her efforts to save the cult (and to be seen as a good person by its members) by offering herself up after it was apprehended and exposed by the Marleyan military had failed, the entire cult- including Ymir- was sent across the sea to Paradis and thrown off a wall that separates the two countries, not before being injected with a serum that turned her into mindless Titan. Left to run for 70 years, she later encountered a group of young Titan Shifters and ate one of their members, granting her the ability to revert into her human self and turn into the Dancing Titan at will.

Given this second chance at life, Ymir decides to live her life selfishly, entering the walls after its fall and living as a thief. After a accidentally eavesdropping and hearing the rumors and scandals of Historia Reiss in a church, Ymir feels pity for the girl, and decides to sought out the girl, thus joining the ranks of the 104th Scout Regiment. She successfully graduates, and continues to follow Krista into the Scouting Legion.

After the events of Castle Utgard and after fulfilling her promise to Krista (who is reveals her true identity to be Historia Reiss), the pair promise to live solely for themselves. However, Ymir eventually chooses to abandon Historia and the Scouting Legion for Reiner Braun and Bertholdt Fubar, upon hearing the latter's desperate cry for help.

After recalling a consoling discussion with Bertholdt about her fateful encounter with the Warriors, she decides to offer herself and the Dancing Titan back up to the Warriors, feeling pity for the pair upon knowing the consequences they'll face if they return to Marley empty-handed. With this, she entrusts Historia to the Paradis Eldians, bidding her goodbyes to the new Queen in a letter that Reiner Faithfully delivers and leaving with him for Marley to be sentenced to death.
