Leaving Home and Finding the Secret Cave
Shadowberry had always been a stubborn hatchling. She inherited not a single drop of her mother's cheerful, calm cheerfulness, or her father's cautious, patient cunning. Her temper was as fiery hot as the Flamecaller himself if not worse.
As a teenager Shadowberry had many minor arguments with her parents and friends. After a 3-week row with her dad she finally did what she had decided long ago: she left. She wrote her friends a note, and her parents a particulary hasty and scribbly one. She guessed no one would really be surprised, as troublesome as she had been all those weeks.
She turned her tail, sniffed the ashen air and left with her head held high and an unnaturally hefty kick on the ground. She worked up a sweat before she reached the border to the Sea of a Thousand Currents. There she cleared the cloud banks, lifted herself above the cotton candy and went for some furious dives. When she felt clean of her sweat and fury she took in the scenery.
It was dawn, with the sun barely rising above the horizon. The mist over the Sea of a Thousand Currents were lifting and revealed the sparkling white and azure whirlpools that gave the water domain its name. She felt the salty air brush against the cliff side and herself. She felt joy and freedom, and a strange tingling sensation of satisfaction and adventure. She took a new dive, one of joy and excitement. She toutched the surface with a claw, surprised at the feel. She did not feel like bathing. Like som many ridgebacks before her she preferred washing off grime and sweat in the morning mist.
A glint of blue in the cliff side attracted her attention. She flew closer and discovered a 3 by 3 meter wide in-cropping. She clawed at the edge until she found a proper grip, and squeezed her wings as tight as she could. Her tail and a leg still hung out. It was a skydancer scroll with a violet corsage as binding. The blue glint came from some blue, broken glass that was arranged behind the scroll like to resemble a blue dolphin.
She wanted the scroll, but did not want to dishonor the previous owner. She knew she could make the "I just borrowed it" excuse, but it didn't seem fair for a so valuable item. And she didn't know if she would feel the same if she used the scroll and became a skydancer. She pushed herself back out from the opening and made her own sacrifice: she dove into the water where it was shallow, and found a lustrous shell. Afterwards she went to the clifftop and gathered a bouquet of the wild flowers she could find. Satisfied that her offering was good enough she returned to the secret cave and exchanged the items. She whispered "thank you" as she exited, and flew in a random direction with butterflies in her belly.
The direction turned out to be towards the Shifting Expanse.
