"There's always time to kill."

Blinding afternoon light shines down into the throne room, illuminating a group of dragons standing there with tense muscles. Seven shapes glint in the morning sun, armor dented and ruined. Three Guardians are slumped on the floor, blood pouring from them in waves. Two Mirrors, assassins from a rival kingdom, hold a Coatl and Wildclaw prisoner. A ruby crown hangs loosely from the Coatl's forehead.

The feathered serpent stares intently at a warrior standing before the killers and prey, fully aware his own life may very well end in minutes. The warrior, a dark feathered 'claw with eyes white as snow and armor black as night, lashes his tail back and forth in pure anger.

The Mirror on the left speaks. His voice is shrill and painful to the ears.

"Choose! Choose! One must die this day, must die, must die!"

Then the other...

"No choice? Both die! That too is a choice!"

Seething with hatred, the soldier grits his pointed teeth and narrows his eyes further. However, before he can make a move, the first Mirror screams.

"TIME'S UP!"

At once, he slits the throat of his Wildclaw captive with a single talon. All hell breaks loose, and the other winged talon screeches a terrifying battle cry as he charges forward.

~~~~~
When he awakens from the daze, only two dragons are left standing- him, and the Coatl. Both Mirrors are beyond recognition, blood scoring across their sides, appearing almost as if they were torn to pieces from the inside out. The snake-like dragon cowers behind his throne, eyes glazed with terror. His own neck has some scratches upon it, and his hind right leg is all but useless as shredded as it is. He'll likely die of blood loss if nothing is done.
The warrior now crouches beside his downed friend, tears streaking down his face. His expression does not show sadness, though; only pure rage. After giving the body a small lick on the face, he stands and moves his gaze to the Coatl.
"You knew. You knew, and you didn't tell me."
But how could he? It's law to never appoint berserkers to warrior status, that would be the move of a suicidal fool. Berserker dragons like this warrior would normally be cast off as hatchlings. At the slightest provocation, they could black out into a blinding rage, unable to halt until all foes are destroyed. Allowing them near others almost always ended in disaster, so even if one were allowed to stay, they must be kept calm at all times- certainly never given a job as stressful as King's Guard.
"Sol, I..." the Coatl starts, but the enraged warrior is already gone. A trail of blood leads from where his love's body had lain moments before.
Falling rain seeps into Sol's feathers as he crouches by his mate's makeshift grave. His helmet blocks the rain from his face, but does nothing to hide the steady tear marks. It is here that he sits vigil, still and solemn, unable to move until sunrise.
When sky fire finally brightens the horizon, Sol stands, soaked to the bone. He pays no mind to his discomfort and leaves a few feathers atop the grave, whispering words of love. Then, he spreads his wings wide and takes off into the sky. Anywhere is better than here.
~~~~~

{HELLO thERE, MySTeRIouS WilDCLaw! My nAMe iS GLitCH!}

Immediately, Sol bolts upright, hitting his head on a branch. Thank Icewarden for the helmet. He glares at the strange being screaming at him from a few meters away. It appears to be some sort of black goat-cat.

"Go away, beast. I need rest."

The creature waves and wags its tail, then bounces forward in a Sprangyroo-like fashion. Sol sighs, then tucks his head beneath his wing in an effort to appear asleep. Why was it so hard to simply hide out in a forest? The Tangled Wood is massive, for sure, and it was supposed to keep him hidden away forever, but perhaps the legends lied. This... thing had found him after all. At least it had taken a couple months for someone to reach this place.

{ERhEM. Eh, hem. Like I said, my name is Glitch. Sorry for startling you before! I don't have verY MUch contROL of my voice. I'm looking for a dragon master to fight alongside in battle. Are you a good fIGHter?}

Sol tries increasingly harder feign sleep, even going so far as to snore. Unfortunately, the noise sounds pretty fake, and the goblin reaches out to touch him. This results in a massive shock, both figuratively and literally. Sol's armor hisses with smoke and his feathers crackle with sparks, flying outward in all directions, resulting in a fuzzball of angry metal.

What happens next is rather unexpected for poor Glitch. The Wildclaw's eyes begin to glow a deathly white, his jaw hangs open, and he screeches as he lunges at the little static mess in front of him. Glitch leaps out of the way just in time, for there are now deep gauges in the ground where he had stood.

Sol charges, and Glitch leaps away again. This time, the Wildclaw rams his own head into the trunk of a large pine, his antlers getting stuck in the process. He claws at the tree with deadly abandon, no sooner freeing himself than causing the entire thing to fall right on top of him. The blow startles him out of his rage.

"Why the *hiss* is there a tree on my back?!?"

Glitch nervously glances at the dragon before him.

{Oh. I can wORk with this. I hope...}

Three years later...

"Right. Can you take that one back for me, Glitch? I'm going to stay out here for the time being. Seems there's a blizzard on the way, but... there's a strange sound, not from any of the traps. I need to go take a look."

Glitch slings a boar over his shoulder, whistling. {Sounds gOod to me. I'll get a FIre going for when you get back!} Sol nods in appreciation, shaking snow dust off his wings. He turns, sighing, and treks deeper into the frozen woodlands, leaving Glitch behind to care for their fresh-caught meal.

~~~~~
Dusk light filters through the branches of tall pines, glinting on contact with fallen snow. For now the weather is calm- Sol revels in the smell of the air, peaceful and, normally, quiet. But there's a ringing in his ears tonight- a sharp and solemn whisper, something he cannot understand nor pinpoint. With a frustrated flick of his tail, he keeps walking, leaving behind a barely visible line of footprints in his wake.
For hours, he continues on, following increasingly louder noises that fill him with confusion. Around this time he'd usually get frustrated and perhaps give up, but something about the sound has him in a trance- his eyes half-open, jaw slack.
<Is... someone there?>
Sol freezes, his daze broken and his mind a blur. He finds himself enveloped in a dark fog, thick and suffocating, getting harder and harder to see. Whipping his body around, he bites at the air, teeth finding nothing but themselves. Something is wrong here, that voice did not come from anything natural. The sounds from before also stopped, as if in wait, holding their breath to see what happens next.
<You... you're real. Not only that, you've come here, and found this place... Please do not be alarmed, I have no intention or capability to harm you as I am. Could you hold still for a moment?>
Sol snarls, fangs bared in defiance. "You think I would trust a voice in my mind? Show me where you are, coward!" The Wildclaw readies a battle stance, holding the hilt of his blade tight in one hand, though leaving it sheathed for the moment.
<I already told you I cannot harm you. Now then, if you would- please take a look to your left, on the ground. Do you see anything there?>
Snorting in confusion, Sol tilts his head. "...Huh?" Unable to sate his growing curiosity, he follows the voice's instruction against his better judgment. Lying half-buried in the snow is what appears to be an amethyst or otherwise violet-hued gemstone- about the size of Sol's palm. Without leaning down, he uses his tail to brush away the powder, then bounces it up into his open hand.
"This thing?" Sol asks, and the haze around him flows into the stone, freeing him from its grasp and leaving him to stare at the object in wonder.
<Yes, that's it! Thank you. The cold has never agreed with me. Once again I must state- please do not be alarmed, I will appear momentarily.>
Sol squints, holding the gem tight, slowly easing his grip on the hilt of his sword. He stares at the thing for a minute, waiting for something to happen. Nothing does. "Well? I'm waiting. Did you run off in fear, perhaps?"
"No, I'm right here."
Startled out of his skin, Sol leaps a meter or two into the air, flaring his wings and sending a flurry of snow in all directions. The voice had been way too close to his ear, and he looks down to see, standing beside where he once stood, an elegantly dressed Coatl adorned in the colors of the midnight sky. Sol lands some distance away in his shock, glaring.
"Heh, I figured you'd react similarly. My apologies, the temptation was too strong. Still, here I am, in the flesh- or, rather, in the fog? I don't think I'm particularly solid right now. Pleased to meet you, you may call me Malady. And you are...?" The serpentine dragon takes a step forward, feathery wings folded and an arm reached out in greeting.
Sol, on the other hand, is not so welcoming. With a growl, he snaps at the Coatl, "My name is none of your damned business, if you're going to be like that. What the hell are you doing here? And what is... this?" He holds the gem as far from his body as his arm can reach, squinting at it as though it might bite him.
"Careful! It's an ordinary amethyst, there's no need to fear it. The only difference between it and any other is that it happens to function as my physical body, for the time being. I'd appreciate if you would not be so reckless with me."
Sol's eyes widen, and he glances back and forth between the Coatl and the stone. Settling his gaze on the Coatl, he comes to a decision.
He drops the amethyst into the snow.
"GYAH!" Malady falls to the earth, shivering. "COLD-"
Laughing quietly to himself, Sol picks up the strange object once more. "Fine, fine. You're either telling the truth, or you're a wonderful actor. Alright. I suppose there's no harm in it if that's all it takes to hold you down. I am Sol, ex-knight of Saerill."
