Nereus ran through the crumbling temple, dodging chunks of masonry and falling columns as the ground trembled and shook, the third quake in as many hours. The coatl's prayer beads rattled against his rune-covered wings as his feet pounded the worn tiles, and his long robes flowed out behind him as he skidded around a corner, only to find his path blocked by two of the huge, fifty-foot statues that framed the doorway of the main atrium. They had fallen against each other, large pieces of broken marble creating a crude wall that the desperate dragon couldn't waste precious minutes trying to clamber over. There were bodies scattered among the rubble too, their personal items strewn along the floor marking a vain attempt to escape the oncoming disaster. But Nereus didn't have time to weep for his fallen brethren, not yet, and he turned back and headed down another hallway. Cracks webbed the walls and ceiling, threatening to collapse at any second, and Nereus truly felt as if he were racing against time itself as he burst into the chaotic forum that lead to the main entrance.

The last few surviving clerics were there helping panicked stragglers, telling them it was too dangerous to fly and to head to the shelters instead. Not that it would help of course, what was coming was beyond anything that the protection of a stone and crystal bunker could provide. As Nereus ran into the daylight, he shielded his eyes from the glare of the sun and took to the sky, scanning the horizon frantically. His heart sank as his gaze fell upon the monster. It was so close, rushing toward the city like a bullet. Nothing could stop it now. There was no time. The devout coatl had warned them, he'd warned them all that this would happen if they continued to interfere with forces of nature in the name of science. Now everything would fall, swallowed whole by an elemental beast so powerful that it could wipe away an entire civilization in seconds. With the inevitable confirmed, the urge to flee drained out of Nereus and he sank to the ground, clasping his claws together in prayer. Not for deliverance of course, that time had long passed, but a plea of remembrance, so that his people would not be forgotten.

The priest opened his eyes one final time, looking into the face of the enemy as it crashed down upon him. His last thoughts were of his loved ones, and the coatl saw them smiling as he felt suddenly weightless, his limp body washed away with the rest of the flotsam and jetsam. Nereus was lifted into the clouds following a bright light, and calm settled over him. He looked down and made his peace with the world as he left it all behind.

Farewell, Atlantis.
