Code:
[columns][size=3][size=4]Clan Castoff[/size][size=2] [/size] This is a place for ordinary dragons. The legends have moved elsewhere, and the few heroes left don't linger much. We're quiet folk, content with our flowerbeds, our scrolls, our trading-posts and trees. When the night gets dark, we'll tend to other duties. But the world forgets those, and forgets us, and even we forget our stories in time--except by the campfire, when the flames burn low.[nextcol][url=http://www1.flightrising.com/forums/cc/1805897][img]http://i.imgur.com/SkIyDB7.png[/img][/url][/columns] [size=2]Clan lore currently getting a touchup, please [url=http://flightrising.com/main.php?p=lair&id=160660&tab=dragon&did=21448518]yell at the well[/url], I need to make that bit better.[/size] Good clan songs: [url=https://youtu.be/sS8boQC7mvw]The Horror and the Wild[/url] (shared by Revolupine) Me: Code monkey, previously lab monkey. My lair/lore is half retirement community, half Crocodile Dundee Eldritch Edition, so take it as it comes I guess. I draw, but [url=http://www1.flightrising.com/forums/cc/2160474]mostly monsters[/url]. I don't do much "FR stuff" (besides overusing the forums), but I'll check in on my phone every few hours for Baldwin, so I should be able to get back to you quicklyish. I mostly use the friends list for keeping up with conversations. This requires turning down random friend request--no offense is meant! They go about their lives with gentle smiles, slow words, the reassuring thought that the world has all but forgotten them. They weave boughs into baskets and crowd them with plants, and sort their recipe cards, and push the skeletons deeper in the closet. Ordinary is the lie we tell ourselves to make the world a less frightening place. Ordinary is what we call ourselves when we need to disappear. In this gently sloping clearing, this place of tumbling blossoms and quiet wind, the ordinary dragons are preparing to change the world.[/i] [/color]

Note: Capensia's lore was the first thing written for the clan, and will likely be the last re-written. Go next door to start the "story."

Rewrite will probably be a kind of clan overview from Capensia's point of view. Hints woven in about some of the darker goings-on, from Rosaspinam's paranoia to Fulgurum's madness to her suspicions of Aria's...whatever, but mostly looking at what's good around here.

Future rewrite notes:
Capensia herself is a tremendous force of personality and one of the few things keeping the clan together. What she lacks in "book smarts," she makes up for in willpower. But she's very ready to believe the best in everyone, and her otherwise-excellent emotional intuition blinds her to deeper issues. As she'll proudly tell anyone, there's not a single bad heart in the lair. Problem is that even a good heart can do bad things in its pursuit of a better world, and even though she's living proof, she refuses to accept it, so she sees the clan only as a group of dragons doing their best to improve things, without acknowledging that they're trying to improve things in conflicting, escalating ways.

Capensia

Soft-Hearted Matriarch

Warmth is Capensia's mark, scrawled in small kindnesses across the Labyrinth's hazy face. It flows from her in puffs and chuckles and makes a home in the crease of her careworn grin. She lies on the banks of streams as she watches hatchlings play in their cold, clear waters. She wanders the clan's gardens, murmuring encouragement to blossoms she's tended for decades. Everyone is a hatchling in her eyes; she feeds and preens and tuts and leads, and if she embarrasses an older dragon, she chuckles deep in her throat and pats them with her wing. She's known the pangs of hunger and cold, and beneath her fur is a crosshatch of scars and bad lessons. She won't see them taught again, even if she has to warm the whole, cold world herself.

Small Victories

The sky is dark velvet wrapped in dancing pink ribbons, though there is little in the ice wastes to appreciate it. The young tundra digs her claws into the hoarfrost and tries not to think of what happens next. She didn't want to join the military, but she knew that the militias were fed, and that was enough.

Hold the line, hold the line
follow orders, you'll be fine

A quiet song in the darkness. It is not the sort of song they march to, all swelling strength and drum measure. This is something different. Something amateur and trembling and flawed. The dragon growls deep in her hunger-scarred chest.

Hold the line, guard the way
gods I wish that I had stayed

Halting. Off-key. It chops the silence into ragged bits and lets it bleed out on the snow-crust. The little dragon thinks of the singer. Pathetic. You don't know the first thing about suffering. They'd probably come from a warm and loving den. Weak, that's what you are. Not a survivor.

Abandon all but what you need,
just a tent and warmth and feed

It isn't just an unpolished campfire song. This is someone's soul, splattered in warbling notes against the cold night, assaulting every waking ear with timid attempts at rhyme and meter. Selfish thing to do, shoving your feelings down someone's throat like that. Selfish, weak, useless. I sound like them. No I don't.

Strike the match, watch it burn,
nurse the wounds that bleed unearned

The lyrics are getting stronger, clearer. The singer's voice trembles with effort as it smears notes along the scale. The tundra dragon claps her claws over her ears. She hates noise. Why can't he be quiet? He would be if I hurt him. That's right. That's right.

She lurches to her feet.

Through this dark and dreary night
still I dream I hold you tight

The singer's voice cracks, collapsing into ragged sobs. They reverberate in the frigid air as they fill the little dragon's head with wordless screaming. She shoves her way past rations and equipment. The singer does not notice--he is too absorbed, too broken. She sees him silhouetted before the fire, shoulders hunched, head down. Finally, she slows.

Raises her claw.

Rakes it downwards, cruel scythes catching the moon.

This feels familiar.

Her paw stops, trembling inches from the singer's form. She lowers it. Gently grasps his shoulder.

"Oh gosh, I am so sorry! I thought...I mean, it was late...I thought everyone was sleeping...oh gods I am so sorry, you probably heard everything, I didn't mean-"

Her head is full of screaming. Capensia shushes him gently. She sits beside him, pulling him close with her wing. Her demons choke on its softness as she wraps it like a blanket around his trembling form, nuzzling him gently, warming him with her breath. He presses his snout into her mane and she strokes his head. She feels her fur grow wet, but neither ever sees the other's tears.

Capensia knows two things: her plants and her clan. While she may not be Sornieth's most brilliant dragon, her kind and caring nature makes her an excellent nest momma. Nothing pleases her more than helping her adopted family, except perhaps the discovery of a brand-new plant species. Her early life spent scouring the icy wastes for sustenance has given her an unquenchable appreciation for food--mentioning to her that you haven’t eaten lately is a risky business! Capensia hardly differentiates between hatchlings and adult dragons, and will cheerfully feed and preen the most haggard Imperial if given half a chance.

Exalting Capensia to the service of the Gladekeeper will remove them from your lair forever. They will leave behind a small sum of riches that they have accumulated. This action is irreversible.
