Biography
History:
Once upon a time, Sable did not exist as she is known today. No, she was crafted with magic for one task one: to protect her charge. For the first years of her life, Sable was a living shadow - darting across floors and hiding in corners in order to serve and protect the son of her creator. She wasn't quite real back then, but as the years went by she grew and learned and became in a way that perhaps she was never supposed to.
She would listen to her charge's stories and woes and sorrow and laughter, and it was from him that she learned to talk. First croaking syllables that were nigh indecipherable, and then careful whispers. She learned that her charge was kind, with a sense of fairness and justice. He made other dragons want to be better around him, made her want to be better - to be more than what she was.
And as she wished, so she became. Her shadow form became more 3D, more solid, as the days went by. Her form became less fuzzy, with more defined edges. The first time she reached out and actually touched her charge for the first time felt like salvation, as she had done something she had never thought possible. She had fallen in love with her charge.
She became more concerned with her charge's happiness than her creator's wishes, and as she knew that he wished to leave his father's lands and strike out on his own... she decided to help him. She knew every crack and crevice of the mighty fortress, and she knew exactly how he could leave.
She offered him this knowledge freely, knowing that he would leave the castle. Leave her. No one was more surprised than she when her charge - Castemere - looked her in the eyes and asked her to run away with him.
She protested, telling him that without his father's magic keeping her together within the bounds of his land she would fade away. That she wasn't real. But he simply took her hand in his, squeezed it, and asked her if that felt real. Sable looked down at the defined claws and fingers and toes that she hadn't had upon her creation, at the fact that she couldn't fade into the shadows properly anymore, and she realized that she hadn't been a mere shadow held together by fragments of magic for a long long time.
So she left with him, with every step forward feeling more and more real. More alive. And it was terrifying in all the best and most wonderful ways, because she had Castemere at her side. And for all the time she had been falling in love with him, she had never imagined the reverse might also be true.
Though she still has an affinity for shadows, Sable rarely shows off her skills. She is shrouded in an air of mystery to the rest of the clan, for neither her nor Castemere speak of their origins before they decided to settle in Osprey Cove. None but Castemere know of less than ordinary beginnings, and in return she keeps her silence on exactly who his father is.
Over the years Sable has borne Castemere many heirs, though only one has stayed with the clan. Most of their offspring have gone on to serve the Ice Warden, which has always been greatly encouraged by both parents. Only Asra, who Sable considers to be the Heir Apparent, stayed with the clan to train to become strong and defend her homeland. Sable approves of her heir greatly, and recognizes the same drive to serve and protect that exists within her own heart.
Asra may be the only child who decided to stay with the clan, but she certainly wasn't the only who who decided to go their own way rather than serve the Ice Warden as their parents wished.
The most notable of which ran rather than face service to the Ice Warden, and her name was Ailith. Castemere often told Sable that Ailith was rather like her, though Sable would throw the accusation back in his face. Her young daughter was headstrong and furious that her fate could be decided for her, and at the first opportunity ran off with a young mirror from a clan in the Windswept Plateau before Sable could even think of ordering her off.
However, it clearly wasn't meant to be when Ailith came trailing home, a young mirror hatchling close at hand, clearly her daughter despite those pale green, foreign eyes. Ailith was heartbroken, but unapologetic as she stood before her mother and father, asking for them to take in this child of hers. Fortunately, Castemere accepted the two quickly enough, for he had always had a soft spot regarding their offspring. And despite all her posturing and fierceness, Sable honestly loves Castemere and so accepted his decree with no protest. She could see in Ailith's eyes that she was not going to stay long. She didn't want to be here, and the way she avoided her child could only mean that she was more alike to Sable than was probably good for her.
And so Sable accepted Circe, the child of Ailith the Rebellious, and her first grandchild. Oh what a thing! Sable at first attempted to avoid Circe completely, but the hatchling actively sought her out and pounced upon Sable with barely contained delight. Despite herself Sable grew fond of the young Circe.
It was not up to her what would become of Ailith, but Circe... well. Sable had a say with her grandchild and she wasn't about to let that go.
