Betelgeuse
The Philosopher
"Dragons like myself have a long time to think about what makes a good life." Betelgeuse is an old dragon, even by Imperial standards. Having lost parents, mate and children to old age, he mostly wanders from clan to clan, taking hospitality here and there. Though born into an Ice lair, he is naturally one of the Lightweaver's children and has spent his twilight(?) years contemplating philosophy and what it means to live a good life. He's had a long, long time to think about it, after all, on top of everything he's experienced. Euryale's is the latest clan Betelgeuse is taking hospitality from. Though surprised that a mirror of all breeds was willing to accept such an aged dragon, he will do his best to teach and corral the hatchlings. He makes a nice living fence. Trying to teach them the basics of philosophy is challenging, but they do have the most entertaining answers. His brief and sun-lit tryst with the roaming Sundial relit the spark of urgency that once dwelled in Betelgeuse's chest. Having a young son in the lair (and grandkids! Isn't that novel) provides hours of conversation and more opportunities for adventure than he has ever experienced before. Even if watching Bistromathic cook is anxiety inducing. Perhaps he can make these twilight years into more of a bang. The Shadow assault hurt them all badly, but Shirubake suffered worse than others, having lost all three of his mates. And while he may not be the most active clan member, Betelgeuse thinks he has more than enough experience dealing with grief. He will take it upon himself to help his clan mate. Neha's initial proposition to paint his wings was not unwelcome; it's nice to be noticed, at his age! Even after he explained that he didn't have much to pay her, she waved it off as practice, if he could assure her a place in the clan. And with antlers like hers, he'd at least try to gift those old bones some rest. He doesn't run into Imperials his age often. As they became more friendly between discussing the merits of art to society and long hours spent sitting as still as possible, he'd asked gently if she'd ever take a mate again. Like himself, she was old by Imperial standards; who knew if their lives would wink out in another day or if they'd live another hundred, even a thousand years. Would it be fair to bond with another when their lives were even more uncertain than most? Neha dipped her brush and touched up another line in the ice on his wing. "Body art is no more permanent than life, but it is still beautiful. We cannot let its transience deter us." He carefully drapes the end of his tail over hers and she thoroughly wraps hers around his. "You old fool." Now that Shirubake is doing better, he and Betelgeuse spend more time talking Ice magic. Though he hates to discuss it, Betelgeuse was once an Avalanche Sentinel from the Cloudscrape Crags. Patrolling the crags for loose icepack, solidifying what they could and triggering what they couldn't, the Sentinels didn't really exist for the safety of the clans. Certainly they'd warn clans they were aware of if the shelf above their den needed to come down, but if they weren't familiar with the area? And of course, there was no way to dig out anything covered in an avalanche. Dragons, sometimes, but not structures. It's part of what drove Betelgeuse to philosophy. While the imperial has had more time to understand his magic, the skydancer has more practical experience in battle. While he'll probably never become a member of the clan guard, he's happy testing theoretical limits of accuracy and delicacy. He also makes the best snowballs for the hatchlings' winter fights. 6thgen, five pure imperial ancestors Legacy: Macaw -> Anisette -> Tome |
