Silent Night

xxxThere's something stirring in the woods tonight.
xxxThe leaves are shifting, and in the faint moonlight they are silver and alive. Far above, the clouds are hanging perfectly still, and he feels no breeze. The whispering leaves above don't seem to care.
xxxOnly a moment later, the leaves are suddenly still, and the forest is plunged into absolute silence.
xxxHe realizes he is holding his breath, and exhales slowly. It is the only sound he can hear; no owls, no crickets, no nocturnal hunters lurking in the dark. He takes another deep breath and forces himself to relax. In the corner of his eye, the ghostly blue light of the old god is slowly becoming discernable somewhere deeper in the forest. Nytho knows better than to look.
xxxThese are the worst nights. Most nights nothing happens at all and he is free to wander the territory, hunting and sometime socializing with the other nocturnal creatures- at night, the territory is his, and as his clanmates are going to sleep, he is only just beginning to open his sensitive eyes and squint against the setting sun. Sometimes a friend stays up late and walks with him for a few hours; many nights he is alone. He is quick to take care of the occasional intruder he encounters while making the rounds: sometimes he points them in the right direction, sometimes he brings them to the clan, and sometimes he has to get his claws dirty, and that's fine by him. All in all, it's not a bad life. He has a family of sorts, a home, a chance to live a comfortable life; and this time he can keep them safe.
xxxBut these nights when the forest comes alive and the spirits start to stir, all he can do is hope for the best. He sees Tjikko quite often, and sometimes fancies the god of dreams to be his friend, even if the strange being never speaks. Llangernyw, though, is a different matter. Nytho has never seen the god directly, but he has seen the ethereal blue light, has felt the dragon's presence in the anxiety and flashbacks that always accompanied its proximity, and has seen the some of the bizzare aftermaths of its unpredictable excursions: fauna twisted and fused together, crystals growing up the side of trees, ancient bones suddenly unearthed.
xxxThis was the sixth- no, seventh?- time he has encountered Llangernyw in all the time he had spent with the clan. The first time, he had been paralyzed with fear, and barely moved a muscle until the distant blue glow faded. Running was the worst thing he could do. And although he no longer feels the same gnawing fear, he still knows better than to run. So he settles down as comfortably as he can on the soft layer of fallen leaves and pine needles, eyes opened but not focused on the glow. His clan is safe; ironically, the god's presence tonight ensures that. No creature nor dragon will come close to this place so long as the god is roaming.

xxxFor him, it will be a long night.
